The check valve is built in/part of the pump. Some pumps are rebuildable but it may be the the same price as a replacement. Some have added a check valve between the pump and the city water tee.

To test while on city water open the drain for the water tank - starting with a empty tank - then check for any water leaking from drain over time. While this is a problem it is not a common one.
