Refrigerator

We have a big trip planed in our st270bh and I wanted to know if we can run the fridge on propane while towing. If not, how do you keep the stuff cold when on the road for 8-10 hours at a time.

This has been debated by many people for quite a while. The short answer is yes, you can, and most people do. Having said that, this can be dangerous in some situations. If you are gassing up and the fridge ignites, the spark could be a hazard. If you were in an accident, an open propane line could be dangerous.

Still, most people do run the fridge on propane while traveling.

If you don't want to, then you can put frozen ice packs in the fridge. These will help keep things cool as long as you don't open the fridge much.

I have run the fridge on LP on every rig we have ever owned.
I always, stop well short of the gas pump and turn the fridge off before pulling in to get gas. Then after pulling away from the pumps we stop and relight the fridge.

We always run the fridge on LP when on the road. They also have a safety valve to prevent leaks in case of an accident. Besides, operating pressure for LP appliances are low less than 0.5 psi.

Mark, I thought LP pressure was measured in water column?
I've never seen it measured in psi.

I run mine all the time on the road but I believe in some states it is illegal to run them inside tunnels. I wonder if anyone has ever been pulled over or cited....

LloydMark is correct. 11 inches of water column is equal to about .5 psi.

Here's an explanation Lloyd.

Quote:
On an RV the LP gas pressure is regulated by a two stage regulator. The job of the first stage is to regulate the vapor pressure coming out of the container, which can be as high as 250 psi, down to 10 psi or less. The second stage takes that already lowered vapor pressure and regulates it down to the 11 inches of water column operating pressure. The reason for using a manometer to test this pressure is that the operating pressure for LP gas appliances is extremely low if measured in pounds per square inch; somewhere in the neighborhood of .5 psi.

OK. I can see where you got it. I've just never heard of it referred to that way. We always used a manometer.

I even have the plans laying around here some place for a home made manometer.
