Roof care
Hi,
While I was at the dealer recently I ran into one of the customers who happened to be a roofer.
He mentioned that he coats his RV's roof with this product called "Geocel", and that it's a good thing to do in terms of preventative maintenance.
Here is a link to the product:
Geocel #2315 Leak Repair Fibered Coating 1 Quart
I've never heard of it and the last thing I want to do is put something on my roof that will destroy it, but he said he swears by it.
So, just wondering if any of you have heard of it and if you think it's worth it. I don't have (currently!) any problems with my roof.
Also, is there an SOP in terms of how to take care of my roof? My trailer is just turning one year old. I bought it new.
Thanks,
mike

I don't do anything to my roof except wash it.
If a person keeps track of the sealant that is around each roof opening, and all seams, repair when needed. That should be all that's necessary.
I carry a tube of di-cor self leveling, and some eternbond tape.
Hopefully will never need either one.

Right from the Geocel website it states not to use on EPDM roofing, which is what most rv roofs are made from. Go with Lloyds suggestions and you'll be fine.

Thanks guys. Do I need to worry about UV? The dealer said it needs to be 'coated' otherwise UV rays will eventually deteriorate my roof within 5 years. Of course he had the product for sale that would do the coating.

The Manufacturer of Alpha roof systems does not recommend any treatment, mild soap and water is all that is required.

Look in our "Documents" section of the forum. There is info from the roof manufacturer there plus a lot of other good information.

I found Spic and Span today at the local WalMart. Not the powder we grew up with, this was in the liquid section by the 409 and Mr Clean. Still the familiar orange, same smell, and no phosphates, ammonia or bleach. I need to crawl up there, and give it a spring cleaning.

My manual also states not to use citrus based cleaners. Not sure what cleaners that would cover.

Pretty much all the environmentally friendly degreasers are citrus based.
Of all places, I found this in an article on the US Forestry's Website.
"The MSDS for a citrus-basedcleaner should list D-Limonene among the ingredients. D-Limonene is in the terpene family, which includes citrus and pine oils."
I like the Spic & Span idea..Cheaper than the stuff I bought from CW.

what sealers to people recommend around all the vents and other stuff on the roof. Found a small area that needs attention. RV caulk (brand/different kinds), outside window caulk?
Part 2 is it OK to just seal the area that needs attention or do you scrape it all off and start clean?

I use Dicor self leveling caulk. You can just go over the old stuff if it's not peeling or loose. Just don't use silicone caulk. Silicone will not stick to silicone if you have to do it again.

Alpha System's LLC the manufacture of the roofing material on the Sunset Trails recommends using Spic and Span to clean the roofs. The power works the best, but is hard to find in stores. I went through amazon and ordered through there. There is a roof sealant made by Alpha called Super Flex that was made for the roofing membrane's manufactured by Alpha, and it can by purchased at camping world and probably any other rv dealer out there.

They might recommend spic an span, but anybody using it might as well figure on re waxing their rig afterwards.
