Running off battery, no outlet power

Just acquired a new RV yesterday! We're using it primarily for a weekend home on the land we will eventually build a home on. We were told the only thing that wouldn't run off battery power was the AC. However we also have no power to any of the outlets. When hooked up to a generator, everything lights up. Is this normal?

Yes, that is the way they work.
The only thing that will work off the battery is the lights, furnace, and fridge.
Just don't count on the battery lasting very long.

Lloyd is right. I think you may of been told the AC power doesn’t work. Not the Air Conditioner. You can install an inverter and a bank of lithium batteries however you need to charge those regularly either with the gen or solar. Your easily 3K into that though once you get solar add a grand. Tons of sites out there on boondocking with solar.

Yeah... He said "AC" we heard air conditioning but he obviously meant the AC power. Rookie mistake on our part. Thanks for the info. I've read about a dozen boondocking articles this week. Not thrilled about the additional work needed or the $$$ but it is what it is. We were always intending to boondock with it initially on a friend's land. The sales guys could have made more money if they had just explained that it wasn't boondock ready off the lot.

You can run your plugs with a generator rather then needing to spend thousands on solar. If you are building a house on that land you will most likely be able to use generator for construction as well.

Generation

If you plan on eventually building, why not plan ahead a bit?

Figure out roughly where you will supply power to your house, get the utility company to come out and install poles and power lines. Then get an electrician to come out and provide you with a temporary panel and outlets, 15 amp for regular stuff and a 30 or 50 amp for your trailer which will run your Air Conditioner. Hiring the electrician would make it all legal and according to local codes.

This process may be way more than solar panel and batteries, or purchasing a generator BUT you will eventually need to get power to the site even for the building process, and doing it this way will allow the bank account to recover a bit from what I would think is a pretty costly item (power). Also running a generator for brief periods of time to recharge batteries, run AC, use the micro-wave is fine, but to listen to a generator humming away for 8 hours is simply nerve wracking, try sitting in a campground listening to your neighbours generator run all day long.

EGRUM has some good advice there. The power to the site at this time would be timely both for you to hook up to as well as the contractors that will be on-site to do the build. They won't have to run their own generators all day.

I believe you did say you had a generator hooked up. That should work all the AC outlets in your trailer and with the inverter will charge your battery and operate all the 12vdc items. I have a Honda 2200 and with everything turned off in the trailer it will fire up the A/C which takes a good jolt to start it. Once going it doesn't draw a lot of power but you could blow a fuse if you turn on the microwave or appliance that uses lots of amps.

With generator hooked up to your trailer and there is no power to the outlets indicates you may have a ground fault on one of the plug in that has tripped. Re set that and it should work. If not sounds like a fuse or, or, or, Then try the electrician, who is coming tomorrow, to run power for your new house, ha, ha!

Better is WHAT do you want to run off 120vac? GEN or shoreline power required for air conditioning, electric heat and battery charging. Even most RV Television have 12v options? WHAT RV did you get?
