Actually it doesn't take to much angle to help get more of the water to drain to the rear.
I always had the nose of the trailer a little high. The bedroom was in the front and I like to sleep with my head a little high anyway.
I haven't seen any slideout awning that didn't collect water in a rain. With the spring loaded system they have, it can't be helped.
What I use to do was pull the slide in a little at a time. Most of the water ran off before dumping it all where it would make a mess.

I wouldn't be without them. Like you stated,they keep the debris off the roof. without them you would have go up there and clean it before pulling it in. Especially if you were parked under trees. Also less noise, and, it keeps the slide cooler when its hot outside.
