Wall Thickness??

Hi All,

Does anyone know the thickness of the walls in a Sunset Trail? I ask as one the top self-tapping metal screw on the top of one side of the awning has pulled out and when I try to screw it in, it just spins and spins. It's a 1" screw and I hope I just need to try a longer screw to fix this. Are the walls 2x3? I assume aluminum walls given the light weight of the trailer versus the size of the trailer.

Really want to get this fixed for peace of mind and the fact we love the awning.

Thanks!

You are correct, they are about 2"+/- thick, thin gelcoat over maybe 1/4" plywood, 1 1/2"-2" Styrofoam & 1/8" paneling inside all sandwiched together with aluminum studs not necessarily on any kind of centers. Longer isn't what you want, it's larger diameter, probably need #12 x 1", be sure to use a stainless screw & washer if necessary coated with some type of sealer. Also check that they put screws in all the mounting holes on the arms, mine had 4 holes spaced from top to bottom with only screws in the top & bottom, I added screws to every hole & replaced all the factory ones with stainless.

Since the wall skins are so thin, I would prefer to use a thin wall screw anchor. Has better holding power.

Just use SS screws like TT said.

The screws in the awning are SS and have a flange or a washer-head, whichever you want to call it.

Thanks for the advice from both of you, I'll go thicker and get the wall anchor.
