Bug deterrent

What's everybody using for a bug deterrent around your camp site that you feel do the job. I'm not referring to any of the products you spray on your clothes and skin.

We've been using https://www.thermacell.com/collectio...ellent-gen-2-0 products for quite a few years and have found that they do a very good job against mosquitoes.

We have a couple of their older models that use butane cartridges and small mats that get inserted in the unit. We now use two of the Radius models that are cleaner and simpler to use. The cartridges last 12 or 40 hours, depending on the model.

I use a thermacell while hunting and it’s amazing. As for around camp we usually build a fire or when the bugs get bad we go inside.

I have been looking at them and reading the reviews. Are they good for anything besides mosquitoes?

Black flies, Deere flies?

They do seem to help, overall, with the bug populations. Thermacell lists it for mosquitoes but we really do see fewer bugs, and my wife doesn't get bit nearly as much.

Yea, I know they are USB rechargeable. The reason I asked if they are - replaceable- is because on some of the reviews people were having issues in the spring when they wanted to start using it again. They were complaining that they couldn't get the batteries to take a charge. If the batteries can't be replaced, that would be a bad deal.

My mistake, Lloyd. I don't know if they're replaceable. We haven't had any problems with the two Radius units we have. One is probably 4-5 years old, whenever they started the model, and the other is 2 years old, which is the current generation.

I saw a video where the campers used an all natural hose end sprayer repellant. It's all natural, so it's safe for kids and pets and won't damage the grass. They would spray it using their outdoor faucet. We didn't try it on our last trip because it was so sandy. That looks interesting. The trouble is, where we usually camp, water spigots are few and FAR between.

Lloyd, they also sell it as a collar. You could wear it around your neck.

I contacted the company by email asking that question. Here is their response.

Thank you for contacting us. The Themacell Radius Gen 2.0 has an internal battery that is not replaceble. We hope this is helpful.

Cutter end of hose mosquito spray. Grey bottle at HD or Lowes or anywhere. I spray our campsite and under the rig as soon as we land. I live on Galveston Bay and use it all the time.

A fan, mosquitoes fly slowly — from roughly 1 to 1.5 miles per hour, depending on the species.

Scientists have identified another factor. The breeze from a fan disperses the human emanations that allow female mosquitoes to zero in on us.

We use Thermacell products. They seem to work well, don’t have an open flame, and are easy (though a little expensive) to use. The other product we like is the mosquito coils that burn like a coiled incense. Use the terra cotta holder. They last a long time and help deter the skeeters.
