Can Finally Turn My Focus to Other Things

It's finally official. After 30+ years of working for a municipal government in central Virginia, I am retired. Today was my last day. I turned in my badge, the 3 laptop computers I had and shut down my desktop computer at the office. I removed my email address from all of the alerts that the servers send out, and now I can focus on all of the things I have been putting aside for so long.

I have a few projects planned for my 5er. I also have a 1954 MG TF that has been sitting in the back corner of my garage waiting to be restored since before my older son could walk or talk. He will be 43 in June!

I have other hobbies (photography and model railroading to name a couple) that I want to spend more time doing. I think photography and camping complement each other quite well. I also hope to be able to spend more time on the forum now.

I can hardly wait until I awake tomorrow. I wonder if I will be sad or elated .

Congratulations! It sounds like you earned it! Yes, it will feel odd not reporting for work every day. For me, it was the feeling of not being able to freely access the departmentent through the employee door any longer. Sobering experience. But I have a feeling you will do well!

I was fortunate and blessed to retire at the age of 49 with 30 years in Law Enforcement in November of 2014. It was a lot of weight lifted off of me and the end of long working hours. My Dad was sick at the time and past away in December of 2015. Then my Mom found out she had lung cancer in September of 2016 and passed away this past January. So, my retirement gave me the opportunity to spend more time with them at critical moments in their lives. For that I am blessed. Being the first person in our Family and Mom and Dads family for that matter to ever be able to retire always made them proud. I did go back to work one day a week as a Bailiff for the court system. But the best thing is when we want to go camping I simply say I'm not working this week I'm going camping. I do love that. Enjoy your well deserved rest and relaxation. You earned it.
