We have a 5000 watt generator but was thinking we would like to have a smaller and quieterone to run the furnace all night and maybe the TV and a few lights at the most on cold evenings, I'm pretty sure the TV only uses 300 watts or less Does anyone know how many watts the furnace uses.Do you think we could get by with the 1000, the smaller the better, even though the 2000 is a better deal.

My personal thoughts....I would not run a genny all night, I know the Hondas are quiet but they do make noise and an un-watched gen can possibly be dangerous. Not sure how much the furnace draws.

The furnance fan and electronics are all 12VDC. If your battery is big enough, you might get one night of heating from the furnace before you'd need to charge up the battery. You could do that during the day.

As for the size of generator, if the dollar difference is not that much, then I'd opt for the 2KW unit, even though there is a bit of a weight penalty with the 2KW.

We'll be dry camping for a month in the mountains N.F. their won't be anyone around to steal anything. also their won't be any chance to charge a battery during the day. Their will be at least two weeks of cold weather where we will need heat at night. always before we had a smaller camper that was easier it keep warm.

Thanks for your replies

If you're dry camping for a month in the boonies then the only thing that you'll disturb is the wildlife and the noise at night may keep them away.

We dry camp every fall in the NF for 2-4 weeks. We run the generator every evening for an hour or 2. This seems to be enough to keep the batteries charged. The furnace runs every night. temps usually get down in the teens.
