Does anyone know how RV air conditions work to defrost the coils ? I ran my air for several days last week in 90 to 95 degree temps mostly in the sun, so it was not cycling but running most the day until evening time.I heard my compressor cycling several times one evening,it would start and run for maybe 30 sec and off for about 2 min. I talked to a RV repair man who said the defrost switch was going bad and if I would run it above 75 degrees it would be fine for the rest of the week. But I wondered about how the system worked, because there isn't a reversing valve as with the home units. The repair man also told me I could do the switch replacement my self if I wanted, which I plan to do.Thanks for any info.

I know this probably not the problem but are you running the ACfan on high or low speed? I found out one time onour old Cruiser if we ran the fan on low in temps above 90* it would do the same thing you discribe. Once I went to high fan speed no more problem. It was trying to freeze up in high temps and the low fan speed would not keep enoughair flowing across the coils. Just throwing things out there.

Was running on high speed. The repair man said I could open the livingroom dump part way to get more air flow and that would help.

I do not agree with your repair man, and the only reason you are freezing up is (1) low freon level. and (2) some type of blockage in the evap. and (3) fan not producing enough air flow, either due to a blockage or fan not running correct. There is no defrost switch on your unit. When your evap. starts freezing it will just keep getting more and more ice and that reduces air flow even more. Your compressor then overtemps and shuts itself off and that will reset itself and try again. The next time it freezes up just turn on your fan and let it defrost Hopes this helps you.

He (the repairman) showed me the black wire going from a switch that the wire was pluged into to a device that was pushed into the condenser coil of the air conditioner.Told me the cost of the device and that it was something I could replace and save money.

I had a 07 Cruiser and it had a deicer that was pushed into the evaporator. I think all it did was if it sensed ice it would cut the compressor off leaving the fan on to allow it to defrost. It could be bad causing the compressor to short cycle as it the sensor opens and closes. Running the fan on high and not on auto helps with icing. I would replace that part.

Here is an excellent link to a service manual. Good information. On page 8, figure A-20, it shows the location of the "freeze control switch". I just inherited & installed a used, 2nd a/c on my Cruiser, thatwas changed out for the same symptoms. After Iread the manual, Ifound that this was all that was wrong. It works fine now. My buddy wasn't too happy though. http://bryantrv.com/docs2/docs/acservice.pdf

Nice manual! Thanks! And yes you should offer it back to your friend with a minimal repair charge of say $700.00

He works out of his RV & wanted cold air immediately, so he had it changed out. He gave it to me for "parts".Ourfamilies do a lot together& I'm sure we will repay in other family outings that we have with them.
