Exclamation Best way to clean awning to get rid of mildew smell?

The roll-up awning on my 2011 Zinger Camper is in very good shape, but at one point the previous owner must have rolled it up wet…..and stored it for a long time. Every time the family and I take the camper somewhere and put the awning out….it reeks of strong mold and mildew smell.

I’ve tried a few different awning cleaners on it, scrubbed the heck out of it…..and even though it looks very clean with only a few light stains from the mildew remaining (I just can’t get those stains off)…..it still has that mildew smell to it.

Are there any tricks for getting rid of that smell? Any special cleaners that will give it a nice deep clean? What about power washing it…..too rough on the awning?

Any advice would be great.

This is what I use when I clean the roof and the awning. I've had to roll my awning up wet and it showed mold spots starting when I opened it. They weren't bad tho. It hadn't rolled up only a few days.
So it probably wasn't nearly as far along as what you are talking about. I don't know if this will take care of your mold problem or not.
If you try to buy any, you will have to call them. They only supply it in WI. stores and outlets.

I use Comet bathroom cleaner with bleach in it. I spray the awning with it, roll it up for a half hour scrub and rinse. Does a great job of getting the stains and gets rid of any mold that is starting.

I use Simple Green concentrate slightly diluted using a 1 gallon pump up sprayer applying to both top & bottom of awning, roll up for 30+ minutes, unroll & scrub with a medium bristle brush, rinse thoroughly, let dry completely., I've used a pressure washer on mine several times, just adjust to a wide spray.
