I have a 5th wheel so I hauled the bikes on the receiver on the back bumper of my camper...I found that the more tie wraps I used on the bikes the less they bounced around to cause damage to the camper...

I guess that depends on what kind of trailer you have and what you tow it with. Ours is a travel trailer so the bikes just go in the truck bed under the tonneau cover.

Eye bolts into the trailer corner..straps to stop bikes from bouncing . Nice and solid.

We just purchased a new zinger 328SB.. we have a 2011 f150 Ecoboost with max tow. I'm hoping we can mount a bike rack on the back. We have the dogs that ride in back of the truck in their kennels.

Historically I have put all 4 bikes on the camper's rear bumper with straps to prevent bouncing. I am looking to put other items on the rear bumper (with the safety strut brackets), so am going to install a front receiver and throw the bikes out front.

edit - we used to just thrown them in the bed of the truck, but then if feel like the take up too much space and are always getting moved even if we don't use them.

F250 pulling 5th wheel camper. Just mounted a front 2" hitch on truck this past weekend. did not like or feel comfortable with bikes bouncing around on camper rear bumper mounted 2" hitch.

Bikes & Hitch

I built my own hitch and 2" receiver and attached it to my RV frame. I then purchased a bike rack from Canadian tire which slides into the receiver and also folds away to nothing when not in use.

You must have missed my picture with tie straps....there is absolutly no bouncing around.

I found that on the back of our 5'er even with clamping mounts on all the hitches, there was still enough play that I did have to spend 30 minutes strapping them down

with the toad now, I'll just mount the carrier on the back of the jeep...

I used to mount them on the toad also but now that we went back to the 5th wheel this is what I use. Even though the bike rack locks the bikes on, I always use a strap to be safe.
I use the pin and clamp on the receiver to trailer but the receiver extension to rack I welded solid.

Looks good. did you reinforce the bumper to the frame or use the clamp on receiver to the bumper?

I don't have a bumper on mine. It's a normal 3,000 lb. hitch welded to the main frame.

I would NEVER use a clamp on hitch on the original bumper to hold anything heavier than a sewer hose, they are very thin metal with very poor welds. Either reinforce the original or better yet have a super duper one fabricated & installed.

Thule

I have a factory 2" receiver on the back of my 5th wheel. I have a Thule bike rack and carry two adult mountain bikes. The straps on the Thule are pretty substantial, but I still reinforce them with a bungie and I also bungie the wheels so the front wheel doesn't turn and the handle bars hit the camper. I use it more often on my SUV and the bikes barely move.

If the camper doesn't come with a receiver on the bumper, I would be careful about clamping anything to it. As someone else stated, they can be very poorly welded.

The ladder also is not a good place for bikes, chairs or anything. The movement and vibration moves the ladder and can effect the attachment points, weaken the ladder and cause leaks.
