Bunk Weight Limits

I have a 262BH and was wondering if the bunk limits of 300 lbs are really to be followed. Just wondering if 2 adults could sleep on the bottom bunk and possibly be up to 350 lbs? Probably wouldn't put 2 adults on the top, but don't see why not on the bottom bunk. Anybody encounter this scenario before with 2 adults sharing a bunk?

Not a direct answer, but this might help. We had a small camper where the dinette became the bed. Two sides, holding up a 3/4 plywood that became the bed center. We, as full-sized adults, worried about it. The answer was to create a big "I" formed with 2/4's, cut to length, carpeted at the ends, to make a snug fit holding up the center. Perhaps you could make some sort of support underneath whatever serves as the lower bed surface.

Did something similar to Marty. Added a memory foam mattress to the lower bunk in the Canyon Trail being as the bunk room and half bath associated with it comprises Joyce's "She Shed". Bunk started to sag, so cut 2X4s to length and place between under bunk frame and floor for support. Cut them to tight tolerances so I didn't have to nail or screw down. No sag now. Nowhere close to 300 or even 200 lbs. combined so, IMHO, the manufacturer's specs are usually suspect.

Can you access the area under the bunk? If so look at the framework and add bracing/ slats till you are happy that you have the support you want. They build on the lite side to save weight. If they did not you would need a BIG truck to move them.

When we first bought our trailer, I was in side the back storage cupboard when our rather large sister-in-law came for a visit (+ 300lbs). As she moved around the trailer she crawled up into the double bed (bunk lower) at the back of the trailer.

As I looked up I could see the stringers across the bed, the ones that hold up the plywood, flex under her weight, that convinced me that the bed drastically needed extra support.

I cut and installed some extra (4) stringers to go along with the factory ones. I actually used 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood glued and screwed together as the stringers, with the plus facing up and down not front to back.

This has made the bed much stronger and secure.

As usual RV manufacturers build everything to the minimum standard to cut weight and cost. It doesn't mean it won't work, it just means it may fail sooner and as they only offer a 1 year warranty by the time next year arrives they are off the hook.

I have many examples of building to the minimum.

I have a 2018 262BH and my wife and I were on the bottom bunk to check it out. The outside kitchen is under the bunk so it has extra support. Between the two of us we weigh 360 lbs.

Before next season I will poke around a bit and see what I can see. It's mostly going to be our kids but just wanted to know in case we had another couple go along with us. Thanks All.
