Burned Electric Smell From Atwood Heater

This spring I mistakenly turned on the electric water heater (on shore power) when there was no water in the tank. I shut it off immediately, and it still heats water. However there is a burnt electrical wire smell while it is on.

Could that one second mistake have fried something? If so, what are the likely culprits?

Thanks

Check the heating element, mine shorted out and had to replace the relay and the element.

If it's the water that smells, fill through your fresh water tank some chlorine and water (I use a tablespoon full of pool chlorine) and let it sit overnight. Drain and rinse.

Thanks.

The water doesn't smell. It seems like an electrical problem but it's interesting that everything still works.

One Second Mistake Ruined the Electrical parts of on Hot Water Heater

I had the relay and control board replaced as a result of my one second mistake. The relay was burnt. The control board wouldn't work after the relay was replaced.

I am going to have to tape the hot water switch in the off position when the tank is empty since it is right above the light switch for the kitchen area. Too easy to hit the hot water switch by mistake.
