Burned Wires

Hi all,

We noticed a burning smell in our camper last fall and traced it down to the wires that are on the back of the water heater(going to element?). The black plastic housing melted as well as the wires.

The water heater now works on LP, but we would prefer to use the electric but can’t as it is getting hot. I’m not thrilled about messing with it as I don’t really have a grasp of electricity. My intent is to have someone come out and repair/replace, to the tune of a lot of money. It is under warranty, but it’s in a permanent spot and we don’t want to give up our weekends there.

Any advice on what could cause this would be appreciated.

Same thing happened to my 13 Cruiser. There is a relay inside that went bad melted and burned off the wires.

This is what it looks like.
Rv shop replaced it and everything is now working fine.

Wonder if I have the wherewithal to pull out the relay and replace? Hmmm...I think I have enough slack in the wires to cut off and reattach. May attempt next weekend. Thanks for the reply! I’ll update once I’ve had a chance to check it out.

If it is under warranty they may cover the cost of the mobile service call, especially if it set up permanently.

Ended up just being the Element. Kind of surprised as it burned the wire’s sheathing and melted the plastic box on the back of the water heater. Glad it’s fixed.

Same thing here. Our tank started leaking. When I crawled behind it to disconnect the 120 volts, the wires were burnt up. Surprised the breaker didn’t trip.
