Can i walk on roof?

How do you know if you can walk on the roof of your RV? Mine didn't come with a ladder. Its a 2021 259 Crossroads Zinger Lite. I would think it would support the weight, because what does a service center do, if you can't walk on the roof?

As I understand it, on a modern RV, It is generally considered that if you don't have a factory ladder, you should not walk on the roof.
These days the RVs are made with such light materials, that it just isn't advised.
I know my roof is very light, and I have leaned on it and it gave so much that I would never consider walking on it.
I put new Maxxair fans in both the vent openings in mine and did fine with a 1/2 sheet of plywood laid down for support.
I see yours is the 'Lite'.. I'd advise against it.

Agree. If no ladder it’s not advised to walk on it. Use of a 1/2 sheet of plywood is recommended.

With the parts shortage some that would normally have ladders were sent out without them. All are accessible just need to put down something to support/distribute the weight.

I'm going to reseal my roof tomorrow. I also have an ultra lite without a ladder. I took 2x4 sheet of plywood with carpet glued to the bottom to keep from damaging the roof.

Why doesn't the OP ask Keystone instead of getting opinions?

When I wanted to find out about mine, I called the dealership and they told me to go ahead and walk on it. The dealership said that you had to be able to walk on it to make repairs. I called Keystone and after being transferred a couple of times a woman told me absolutely not to walk on it without plywood. I now trust the folks here on the forum more than those people!

I was also told, if you don't have an access ladder to stay off and/or no accessory's. I wanted to haul kayak's on the roof. My Zinger roof is like a rubber membrane covering the complete roof and sealed at all edges. it is not necessarily glued of fastened out in the center. allowing it to expand & contract. They told me at the dealership this is a better quality and longer lasting roof. BUTT If you gotta go, yes plywood !

I did, they have a tendency to not respond.

It'll be pretty obvious if you have a walk-on roof. Does it flex when you put pressure to it?

One of the selling points of my camper was that the brochure indicated that the model all had walk-on roofs. I thought it was weird that it didn't have a ladder and was just going to add one. First time I got up there I realized it was not walkable. Glad I didn't just step on it.

It is not the end of the world of it's not, it just takes a little more care and preparation.

Personally, if be concerned with placing anything up there for travel. That rubber is thin regardless of the plywood used.

Walking On Roof

I have a Sunset Trail 253RB without a ladder. Because I like to base my actions on facts, not opinions, I sent an email to Keystone asking (1) Is there a weight rating on my rear bumper, and (2) Can I walk on my roof.

Here is the email response I received answering my questions.

to me

Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting Crossroads RV. In regards to your email, our bumpers do not have a weight rating for them if there is no hitch or anything on the back from the factory. If you add anything on, it can damage the unit and would not be warrantable through us. Also, I do show the rear wall of your unit is backed for a ladder to be added on if you would like to, which means your roof is walkable!

If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact us directly at 1-866-425-4369.

Thank you,

Gabriella Mahony

I see you have a 2021 so that was probably one built for a ladder but they were not available with the parts shortage. But all roofs are accessible to service them just have to put something down to distribute the load.

My trailer is a 2022. I made an error in typing the model year in the Signature. It's corrected now.

I didn't see anything in Keystone's response about having to put plywood on the roof.

Your camper was supposed to have the ladder by the response from Keystone that it had backing for it so you would not need anything but if a camper is not fitted with a ladder they are still accessible to service the roof/vents/AC/Antenna by using something to distribute the load. They may not be walkable but are still serviceable.
