If you pulled them both at the same time then installed two new ones(batteries)I would pull the negative lead on one battery for 15 to 30 minutes then reinstall it and reset everything. If you installed them one at a time then you might want to reseat the grid heater relays. It sounds like the ECM needs to be reset which pulling one negative battery lead should do.

ECM will not reset or communicate. After 7 hours of
searching for a problem I called for a tow truck. It looks as though the ECM
died. I have never had a dead battery before. I guess low voltage was more than
it could bear. I’ll bet the bill will be more than I can bear.

Dave, that was basically what happened to mine when I pulled both the old batteries at the same time and then installed the new ones. Only mine did not die it just lost part of it's programming. After a tow truck ride to the dealer they reprogrammed it and it was back to normal. I was lucky and it happened while I was still in warranty and they covered it.

Hunter,</span>I'm glad that they could fix yours.</span>Wouldn’t you know it? Our Chrysler Bumper to
Bumper Warranty expired last year.</span> This charge may be $2,000.00 plus. Thank
heavens we got a good deal when we purchased the truck.</span>Kamper Dave

That stinks, Maybe you will get lucky and it wont be as bad as your thinking. Low voltage is not a good thing.
Is this your first set of batteries ? We replaced ours at least two years ago and they were over due but our truck sits for long periods of time.

I've wondered about replacing the batteries. I've got a 2005 with 45K miles on it and original batteries. Spends a lot of time in the garage. Do I just wait until it starts to crank slow, or do some preventive maintenance to prevent being caught out in the middle of nowhere (not that I visit that region frequently)?

These were the original batteries from 2004. We keep the Battery Minder on these batteries all winter and whenever it is inactive. I had noticed after removing the Battery Minder for a week that she didn't turn over as fast or start as quickly as before.
The evening that thing went bad I used the Battery Minder Condition Tester on the electrical system and it wouldn't even light up. I should have just put the charged back on the batteries. Hind-site is always 20-20.
It sure seems that low voltage or removing the batteries on these old ECMs may be a problem. I wish now that I would have left the charger on and CAREFULLY changed one battery at a time.

There is an article in the May 2012 issue Diesel Power Magazine addressing this very issue. It's for a Powerstroke, but the fix is $500 and done with basic tools. Weak batteries wreak havoc on the electrical systems for diesels. Trust me I know. Me jumping starting old batteries cooked my alternator (batteries $200, tow $75, alternator $375).

Both batteries in my Duramax were replaced under warranty about two weeks ago @ 35,600 miles. No damage other than new batteries. One started to fail last year and took until two weeks ago to fail bringing the second battery along.

Guess I'm lucky. I'm on my fourth set of batteries in 12 years on my Cummins. Never had that problem. Just pulled the old ones out and put the new ones in. Two of the four sets were prorated, though. All cables removed and cleaned. Knock on wood. Sits outside year 'round, but rarely goes more than 3-4 days without being driven. Never had a trickle charger on it. Used the block heater maybe twice in all that time. 213K and still going strong.

rv-rick, your truck is like my old 2001.5 was and you could swap batteries without issue because they do not have the electronics on them the new Common Rail trucks do. If I had known when I bought my 2001.5 we would be buying a 5th wheel one day I would have ordered it with a 4.10 rear endinstead of a 3.54 and I would probably still own that truck.

My truck is a 2005 Dodge Cummins 2500HD. Still on the original batteries and they seem to be fine.

It's hot ambient temperatures that kills batteries and it won't be noticed until it cold. Those down south will go through a lot more batteries that those up north.. I know on the 6.0L Powerstrokes Ford went with a national universal battery that works great for most parts of the country with 1450CCA (2 x 725). Again it's fine for most, but if it's exposed to continuous hot temps, then once it get cold it's done. I replaced mine with 1650CCA (2 x 825) what a difference on those 15F days in starting. I could have went with 2 x 900's but the plates get thinner creating a bigger potential for a broken plates.
