I have a 2020 Sunset Trail 253RB. When I get to my camping place or home/park the trailer. I turn my truck off and disconnect everything. Then when I want to start my truck to pull forward, my truck starts like my truck battery is dying. I had the battery tested and all is good. Is there something on the trail that could be drawing juice from it?

Did you have the alternator checked out? Most auto stores will check for free.

Yes, had a full check on the truck. Battery, alternator, starter , solenoid and fairly new truck 2018.

Could be a bad cell in the battery. If a battery has a bad cell; sometimes it will crank fine and sometimes it won’t. And testing don’t always show it. Been there done that!

My first question is "Do you have 12V on the male connector at pin 4 on the truck"? See attached link to trailer wiring. If no, trailer is not the problem. If yes then, does this only occur at that point after you have towed the trailer or are there other instances without towing that this has occurred? If only when hauling, I would suspect a draw, possibly by a short, in the trailer wiring that is draining the truck battery faster than the charge rate. What output is the truck alternator?

Yes, it only happens when I haul the trailer. Alternator voltage checked at 14. I have hauled the camper 5 previous trips and this didn't happen.

Had a truck that had a similar problem. After a trip or when on the road if we would stop at a rest area the truck would crank over really slow like a low battery. Tested everything all was good. Turned out to be the truck starter. Took the truck with the camper to the shop after a small road trip to warm everything up and it was determined that the starter would "Heat soak" because of the extra heat from towing and would "drag" while trying to start. The starter when removed would test good because it was cold. Replaced starter and that solved my problem.

One more thought - Locate the trailer battery + fuse on the truck and remove it on your next trip. That will allow to have brakes and lights but eliminate the camper battery. Your truck will not charge the battery but if it still starts like a low battery you just eliminated the camper so then the problem would be in the truck. If it does not do it then check the trailer wiring.

Thanks for the info. Could you please explain a little more detail about "locate the trailer battery + fuse on the truck and remove it"? are talking about the 15 amp fuse by the trailer battery?

Not sure what brand truck you have but under the hood in the fuse box there will be a fuse marked trailer battery or something close. It protects the truck from a short in the trailer battery wiring. Check your owners manual for the location. This would eliminate the trailer if it still does it or show that it is something on the trailer side if it does not do it. By breaking the system it to 2 pieces it should give you a direction to look.

On my Silverado, the fuse for the auxiliary power to trailer is called "Trailer Connector Battery Power." It is a 40 amp fuse. All 7 wires to the trailer connector are individually fused.

Ive had same problem,if rv is connected to truck with light cord,rv power consumption will discharge truck in time if a battery charger is not on in rv .unplug light cord from truck,should solve problem .

i have the same trailer was told at dealer that the truck alternator will be trying to charge the truck and trailer battery(s) and run the 12 volt fridge and trailer exterior lights. A lot of people are having to upgrade the alternator to a higher output to cover demand.
