Extending 50 Amp Power Cord

Hi All,

Looking for a safe, yet cost efficient way to extend our power cord for our camper. At the end of last season, our campground owner changed to metered lots(we are seasonal). Our power cord is about 6 feet too short. While I could buy an extension cord, I am worried about the longevity in the weather. Thoughts?

Other options are:

1. Shell out big $ for a longer cord.
2. Wire 2 cords together in a weatherproof junction box and put it under the camper.

Input is greatly appreciated especially if you have been in this situation before!

Thanks!

You know in your heart that the new, longer, one piece cord is the right answer.

I'd go with a short extension. They are made to hold up and will save you tons of money in the long run. Here's an example. https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Wiring/M...10-5015EH.html

or https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Wiring/M...10-5010EH.html

That's a savings of close to $125.00

Compared to even this 36' cord https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Wiring/E...77-000155.html

Where we camp in the fall, the site we always get has the pedestal on the opposite side from where it should be. Consequently, I have to use my extension cord. What I do is get the plug under the camper and set it up on a block. That way it's out of the rain/weather and any water that runs under the camper doesn't affect it.
If you are always in a seasonal site, I would think seriously of replacing the existing cord with a new permanent longer one and keep your existing cord for an extension when or if it would be needed.

I have an extra 50 amp Rv cord for an extension that I keep in the storage compartment just in case.

I don't see any reason why you should buy a one piece cord when an extension would do the trick and be much less expensive...I have an extension that I carry with me and have not only used it myself but have lent it to other campers in the campground where we were staying who have needed it to hook up because their cord did not reach the pedestal...Bottom line is that it is a matter of preference...Whatever you feel comfortable doing...

Thanks, all! I am going to measure tomorrow and see how long of a cord I have and need. I think the right thing to do for my families safety is to get the longer cord and keep this as a spare. We are seasonal and don’t move our camper. Too many chances of and extension cord getting wet.

Thanks!

This one is $66.00, for 15". I don't think you can make your own 6', for this amount.

$25 for each end = $50, plus wire.

Since you are seasonal, I would get this option. Don't need an extra 50'.

For myself, I have an extra 50' extension. I don't need 50' either.
