I've been looking at the portable fire pits sold by various camping supply stores...I then remembered that I have a couple of old automobile rims. If I were to invert the rim so that the deep side were facing upward, it would seem that this would be a great substitute. The only problem I see is the large hole in the center which could be covered. Has anyone else made their own fire pit out of something similar? I know that some of the commercial versions come with screen covers, but it would seem that the screen wouldn't last very long before the fire would destroy it.
I got an old semi wheel we use. It's heavy and big but it was free and we normaly only use it when we want big ger fires any way so it worked out well. I got my last two for free.
If you have two join them together with a chain, but be sure you can nest one on top of the other. Bury the bottom one. This gives much better air flow than one wheel alone meaning the fire burns hotter and more ash, less waste.
I use an inexpensive pit from Walmart ... I am always conscious of weight, space,and cleanup. It disassembles in minutes and back in crate. It cost $49 on sale at end of season and is perfect for campgrounds where ground fires are not allowed. I do not use the screen ...
I have used a rim with a grille that swivels on or off the fire that we cook steaks on. I also had a receiver tube welded to it and we pin it to the hitch on back of camper easy on/off and out the way.
Hi ALL We are brand new to this and are buying a 2004 30ft crossroads cruiser. Does anybody have any good/bad info on this model. The unit is super clean and has very little use.
