Flush potty wet feet

Anyone know how to fix a problem with the diffuser spout on a toilet? When I press on the pedal to flush, unless I am real careful, the diffuser spout sprays water unequally, resulting in a spray of water up the side of the bowl and out onto the floor - usually on my foot. Looks like the diffuser (?) would pop off for cleaning but I am afraid I will break it? Ideas?
