I want to start keeping our 2009 Zinger zt19rd plugged in but my friend said if were not using the fridge it would hurt it. So my question is it better to keep it running like a house fridge that has a compressor and fan or not?
Thanks for the advise.
By the way is it camping time yet?
Shawn

I was a little confused with your post. Do you want to plug your rig in or your fridge? Or both?

I do not leave my fridge "on" while not using it. BTW an RV fridge does not perform like a house fridge. Different cooling process.

It really wouldn't be any different than living in it full time. But why? Typically the fridge doesn't take that long to cool off. Usually I'll plug my trailer in about a day before a trip to charge up the batteries and to cool down the fridge as we put groceries in.

We leave ours off with the doors open so the seals do not compress when we are not using the trailer. I know people that leave theirs running all the time with no ill effects. Edited by: Hunter11

Thanks for the advise all.
I was going to leave it plugged in (the trailer) so if we decided to go camping we just had to hook up and go....okay stock it up with cold adult beverages first and go. As you all can tell we are still new at this

Because of different schedules we can only camp every other weekend, but once in a while we're able to head up to our favorite CG on short notice. Therefore, we always have enough cloths, food, fuel, and those "cold adult beverages"on hand 24/7.

Therefore we leave the 5er hooked up to a 20amp feed from the house from mid-April until Columbus day when the CG's in this area close. As soon as I can afford it, I'm laying a 50 amp feed and water line. As soon as I can figure out how to skirt local Codes and OrdinancesI'm hooking up to the City sewage. Then we'll be good to go forCamp Driveway without having to drag the trailer someplace to dump the tanks.

I talked with a man that rebuilds these RV refrig for a living and he says that most leaks are from the outside of the tubing from rust. His idea is that the freezing and thawing cycle by bringing a camper home and turning it off causes rust on the steel tubing in the upper part of the refrig. I don't have an idea so I leave mine on until winter time and thaw it one time. For over 10 years I haven't had any problems.I keep everything in mine that we need to camp and it makes it easy to get ready each itme and saves on the unload time when we get home.

Regarding LYNLOU14760,"As soon as I can figure out how to skirt local Codes and Ordinances I'm hooking up to the City sewage."

If you know where your sewer lateral is, just tie into it and run a gravity line to a convenient location. Install a clean-out for your new sewer service. Don't even call the City IMHO. We plug our 5'er into a 20amp receptacle (don't need air conditioner).

Interesting concept. My only experience was with our previous 1973 "me-too" 5th wheel. We turned the frig off after every use for more than 30 years. No frig problems whatsoever.

Our camper is always pluged in, I do turn the fridge off in the winter. In the spring we will load it up and it stays that way until fall. It kinda stinks when it trips the breaker though and you don't notice it for a week .

Our camper is always ready to go, When we come home the sheets get washed and new ones are put on and the dirty cloths get washed and put right back in, Always ready.

1.) If you know where your sewer lateral is, just tie into it ...

2.)Don't even call the City...

3.)...don't need air conditioner.

1.)Do you mean the linerunning from the house to the City system? Wouldn't be a

problem if it wasn't for my driveways; I'd have to go under them.

2.) I never call the City. Local codes "mandate" that I callCode Enforcement before any

plumbing or electrical work is done. They want to inspect your systems before and

after work is done. It's nothing more than a ploy on behalf of the City F.D. to create

the "need" for more manpower. Yeah, right; inspect "this."

3.) It would be nice to be able to use the air conditioner when we're reduced to camp

driveway for the weekend, or when relatives come to visit for a weekend during the

summer.

You might want to look into one of those sewage macerators that you attach to your drain pipe which I believe Camperworld sells. Using a 12V motor, much like a garbage disposal, it allows you to use even a garden hose to dump. Just stick the other end of the hose into a sewer cleanout and let 'er rip. If i recall, they are a couple of hundred bucks but that's probably cheaper than putting a sewer line in.
