Has anyone installed an auxiliary gas tank in the bed of a half ton heavy duty pick up to increase mileage between fill ups.

Not in the bed, but I have a 45 gal replacement tank from 'transferflow.com'. They also sell in bed types as well. I have had two of their tanks. They work great and highly recommend them. I installed one myself (tricky but fun) and they installed the second on my new truck on one of our vacation trips. They are based in Chico, CA.

I had a 6.0L 2500HD and put in a 45 gal tank. The new truck is a Duramax 2500HD and I also got a 45 gal tank. Really makes a difference on distance I can travel before I need to stop. The stock tanks were 26gal (short bed).

I had a local truck specialty shop put a 30 gal. aux. tank in the bed of my old 2001 GMC pickup. Had electric transfer pump and routed it through the main tank fill line. It had a level gauge and either gauge could be displayed on dash gauge via a toggle switch installed on dash. I could transfer fuel on the fly using the pump. Worked really well.

On your newer trucks 06 and up you have to either buy trans flow for an in box tank or buy a 12 volt pump for gas or diesel. Just because it says only diesel they will work for gas. The reason you can no longer direct drop into your tank is because you will screw up your emission controls. Computors are not always are best friends. I have a 48 gal. tank and pump it in my tank no problems in 30,000 miles.

i wonder why no one says for gasoline? is it dangerous to have gas outside of the frame rails unprotected from impact?

First time I've ever heard this. How would the gas/diesel tank know the fuel was coming from a nozzle at the gas station or from a line in your auxiliary tank?

Because when you take your gas cap off it releases the pressure in your gas tank and your computor can read the differance. This is all part of Cali. emissions. This is explained better on the Trans-floe web site.

Can't find a "Trans-floe" website. Would be interested in reading more about this.

On Dodge diesel fuel tanks there is a vent on top of the tank. Seems as if this would prevent pressure building up in the tank anyway.

The website is 'transferflow.com'. As mentioned in previous post, I have had two replacement tanks and they work great.

The statement I made is for gas only. Diesel can be gravity fed witha check valve to shut off flow when full.

Just after I got the '06 I had the stock saddle tank removed and a 53 gal tank installed. In the bed I had a 65 gal tank put in. 2 valves under the seat allow me to shift from one tank to the other, plus the bed tank has its own fuel gauge. This allows me to look for lower costs stations at the diesel pumps.

i just looked at the transferflow website. it looks like there is a difference between diesel and gasoline tanks. gasoline tanks are more expensive. dont know why.

You could check out Tourbuddy. They list only diesel, but you can call them to see if there is anything they can recommend. Worth a shot.

If you google gas tanks, you might find something. There are/were a few other tank

manufacturers I looked at for a previous gas truck, It's been a while.Edited by: rv-rick

thats a good option(tour buddy)...but my original point was carrying that much gasoline outside of your frame rails unprotected seems real dangerous. diesel does'nt burn anything like gasoline. if i had a diesel enginge that would be a perfect option for me. titan makes under the truck tanks that go in the stock location, but they also only list diesel.
