I'm looking to purchase a GPS but am confused as to which is a good model / brand to buy. I usually just look at the map, but with 30 foot of trailer in back of me I don't want to find myself turning around because I missed an exit, etc. I have used an older TomTom but it was horrible. It's user interface was hard to use and I couldn't update the maps.
I really liked my Droid phone with Google maps, but I don't have that phone anymore.
I figured this forum was the best place to ask for an opinion.
Thanks everyone.

Steve,
I have had Garmin's all my life...but I purchased the Magellan Roadmate 9165 at Camping World and then purchased the rear-view camera from Magellan online. The Roadmate does everything my Garmin's ever did and they have all the campsites in them also. They show you which lane you should be in when on an interstate...they give you warnings 2 miles in advance compared to 1 mile for the Garmin. They then give you warnings again at 1/2 mile and when you are just about on your turn you hear a chime, which is nice. You can program trips in, along with the weight and height of your trailer and it will warn you of obstacles or roads you should avoid. I haven't been throughout the country with it yet but everywhere I have been so far it has worked as advertised. I am pleased with it and give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. The only way it would get 5 stars is if it cost less than $100 LOL. I hope this helps you Steve. Let me know if you need more info.
Jim

We too have a Garmin 2450 and used it on our 8,000 mile trip around the country last summer, it never missed a beat. We have a number of different Points of interest (POI's) loaded including Low Clearances, Wally Mart,Odditiesand more. We too have the lifetime maps that we always check before a trip. "Jeanine" does a good job of giving directions and the screen is easy to see in bright sunlight and not so big as to be distracting.

My Magellan is about a 100yds behind me on the freeway. When it says exit now I have already passed it plus they want $80 to upgrade the maps. Funny but it worked fine until the first upgrade to the firmware and it's been behind ever since. I just checked CW and they now offer lifetime map upgrades for the Magellan Roadmate Plus BUT $50 more. I have been looking at the Rand McNally and with my experience with Magellan am leaning that way. The idea of a backup camera is interesting but the only place I would want it is on the back of the trailer and I don't think it has that much range, plus the drain on the trailer battery.
Decisions, decisions...

My garmin has a tendency to get me lost. I have to be really careful with it. It likes to take me to some really weird places.

If you want to get lost try Microsoft Streets and Trips.. No matter where I want to go it routes me thru a town about 65 miles to the east of my. Even if I want to go SW. I haven't figured that out yet.

Have a Garmin 560 with lifetime maps which has been pretty good so far....but the Rand McNally is very impressive. If I had to buy one today it would be the RM which was designed especially for RVs with several features like Walmarts and Vets in the database in addition to the stuff the Garmin has.

Sirsea, Your Garmin may be too old but the newer ones can be loaded with points of interest (POI's) for Wall Mart, Vets and much much more.
I'm not selling Garmin's I'm just a really happy user

Magellan Roadmate 9165 Pro for big rigs. This is the second Magellan Roadmate I have and they both are great. Checked it with my google maps on my phone at the same time and they were right on.

Steve,
Good choice on whichever you choose...they all do a lot of what we need from them...it boils down to cost or personal likes...I picked up my Cruiser Thursday, had my backup camera installed and was surprised it worked as advertised...more surprising was that they said it had a 45' range...and when the dealer turned it on there were 5 bars for the reception...and the picture was crystal clear...as info for anyone else reading this...you have to run wires from the front of the trailer to the rear light in order to use the backup feature...meaning when you put the TV in reverse the signal carries to the rear lights where the camera is...hope this helps anyone thinking of this...today we're headed for a local country campground to practice using it and backup parking

Jim, is that the only time the camera works is when the TV is in reverse?

Lloyd,
Yes, it activates when the car is put in reverse and the back up lights recieved power..power is then sent to the transmitter and it turns the unit from a GPS to a receivving station...works pretty good so far...went to a county campground today to try backing into 90 degree sites...not as easy as I thought, they are small too and the road is single lane...making it that much the harder...but I guess if I can master these tight small ones maybe I'll do better when I get to the ones that are angled or have a wider road...next weekend we try all over again then perhaps the weekend after that some real camping...none of them are open yet down here...1st of April accordiing to the website...we'll bide our time Sure wish we were going to Kerrville with you guys...I'll be booking my reservations to the factory rally this week
Have you been out yet?
Jim

I believe Keith said there is a couple spots open yet. Why don't you load er up and come on down.
No, we haven't been out yet this year. I did pull it out of the shed and move it over so I could open the slide out.
Boy, this thread is sure getting Hy jacked!!!!
So in other words, your camera isn't functional when you are driving down the road??? It just activates when the TV goes into reverse?

Lloyd,
My wife cannot get the time off or I would go in a heartbeat...
And you are correct, you cannot watch the traffic as you drive down the highway
