In my 32 years of camping, this is what I do. Leave the black tank closed with two packs of Campa-chem (from Walmart) washed down. I do leave the gray tank open when I get to a full hookup site and the black tank always stays closed until you dump. If not camping at a full hookup site, leave everything closed until you dump. If I’m at a full hookup I close the gray tank the day before I leave to flush out the sewer hose once I dump the black. When I’m ready to dump the black I make sure the gray is closed and dump the black. I use the tank flush and clean the black tank opening and closing the valve to let the tank fill and dump again until clean. My wife stays by the toilet to be sure not to over fill the black tank. (That’s self explanatory). That is unless there’s others waiting to dump them I dump add some water and wait till I get home to clean completely. Once the black tank is clean I close the black valve, flush a couple more packs of Campa-chem with a couple Gallons of water (leave in) and it’s ready for the next trip. Flush the hose with the gray tank water. Always, and I mean Always, make sure the hose is securely clicked onto the dump pipe before you open a valve.
