I think this may have been asked before but I can't find it. Is there a hot water heater drain plug replacement available with a valve to allow frequent drainage? A while back my wife had surgery and several weeks later developed a severe infection requiring surgical intervention. We were just thinking about it recently and thought about the water sitting in the 10 gal hot water heater. We went on an RV trip about a week after her surgery. It was extremely warm weather and the hot water heater I assume still had 10 gallons of old water in it. After heated and then set for two weeks I'm assuming the water is not exactly sterile. Of course I have no idea if that's what caused the infection but we would feel a lot more comfortable about using that water if we could drain it after each outing. Any ideas?

They do make drain plugs for the hot water heaters butthe ones I have seenare brass. A brass plug installed in an aluminum drain is not going to be a good thing. The brass and aluminum are going to react with each other causing galvanic corrosion. You mightjust have to pull the plastic plug after every trip. I try and carry a couple of extras in case I ever need to replace it.

Being that we camp pretty much year round, I have to drain mine a lot between October and April. I have the plastic plug in mine. I am careful and use plumbers tape and have not had a problem at all. I have a spare just in case but have not had to use it.

Grant - no....don't have the Kingston anymore but will have a bigger (and better?) one as soon as we can get a 2010. I believe the valve box is not too much different on the new ones although I did get a pic from another Kingston owner that showed they now have the heater bypass valve on the panel. A hot water heater drain valve on that panel would be the absolute answer

Should be able to install a CPVC nipple and valve. CPVC is rated for 200-220* depending on manufacturer.

I drain my water heater by opening the low water drain for the hot side and then open the pop off on the water heater. Seems to drain just fine. No need to remove the plug from the water heater.

My first post so be patient, I use an anode rod and remove and rinse it after each trip and drain the water heater that way. I also have an old shop vac hose I put on the drain so it doesn't splatter everywhere.
