How do I securely attach to walls?

One of the bench-backs in my dining area broke free from it's support to the wall of the slide. It would be generous to say the vertical board connecting the bench back to the wall is a 1x1 board.

What is the best way to securely attach the bench back to the wall. Specifically, what is inside the wall to attach to (if it was a house, I'd be looking for a stud)? Obviously the bench back is in a very specific place that cannot be moved, so I have to connect to the wall where it is.

I plan to rebuild the back support area. Just need to attach to the wall securely.

Ideas?
