How to read propane regulator window

My travel trailer has this propane regulator and two tanks. The indicator window turns RED when the tank is empty. As near as I can tell it only turns red when it's empty.

Is that the way it's supposed to work?

That doesn't seem very helpful. I know it's empty when all the appliances stop working. Who needs a little red window to tell me what I already know?

In the picture the tank on the left is empty. Turn the lever with the arrow to the right tank and the red will go away. Then you can disconnect the LEFT tank and fill it with no interruption in the gas flow. Then when it turns red again do the same thing with the other tank. You will always one tank full. When it turns red it "changes over" to the other tank as long as it is full and the valve is open. To work properly both tank valves need to be open

Thanks for the reply.
So it will never tell me when a tank is getting low. It's just indicates it has switched over to the "other" tank.
OK, got it.

There are tank level gauges/monitors on the market. Never had one so not much help but someone here may have and can provide more information.

It's called a "changeover regulator" not a gauge, it changes tanks when needed, provided both are open. Typically unless running the furnace a 20# bottle should last 3-4 weeks, with furnace running only 3-4 days, so just check the regulator occasionally, if red turn lever to the other tank & go fill the empty.
To my knowledge there's not a very accurate type of gauge for propane tanks available.

Texan's right. Monitor your tank's changeover regulator once and a while to make sure you always have a tank with propane available and don't waste your time or money on a pressure gauge. I had one for a previous camper and rates right up there with the most useless things I ever wasted money on purchasing.
