hydraulic bed lifters

Not sure what they are called, but the things that assist in raising up the bed and help to hold it up if there is not too much weight - we need help.

The bed got slightly damaged one time when we put the slide out and my husband just fixed it. In order to gain access, he had to remove the plywood that the mattress sits on. He removed the hinges and the aforementioned things. Now we are trying to put it back together, and when he attaches these things, the bed will not go down. They seem to be stuck in an extended position. We do not want to force it too much in case we break something else.

Is there some kind of trick to these things?

Thanks.

Are you trying to lower it with the mattress on or off? The weight of the mattress will help in lowering. The strut can take a significant amount of pressure to compress. some are rated at 80lbs or more

The mattress is not yet on. My husband connected the things to the bed (he had to remove them to do the repairs) and the bed would not lower. The things are extended and will not compress.

We have had the trailer for a year and a half so I know how much weight they hold. As a matter of fact, I have a piece if wood to hold the bed up while I put things under there. I store my dirty laundry there in baskets.

We are unsure how hard to push as we do not want to break them.

One more things - do we need these things to stabilize the bed - as in help take the pressure off the hinges? Could we just leave them off?

If nothing was damaged or bent in all the goings on, I think you just have to push harder. The weight of the mattress not being on there will mean you will have to push hard enough to make up for that.

You are right. We pushed harder and they did compress. Panic over! I was just afraid of breaking something.

Thanks.

The new mattress fits fine and we look forward to sleeping on it Friday night.

Be careful when pushing down and take note of how the hinges on the box frame are holding up. We had to put in extra screws to stabilize our hinges. the box frame wood is not the best quality and I snapped off the attachment when forcing the bed down.

My husband attached them at the same place where they were attached. The new mattress is somewhat heavier than the old one and it is quite a chore to lift! Maybe I will develop better muscles doing it!

One other note, you should always put the extension rod side down. That keeps the internal oil lubricating the seal, preventing leaks if they dry out.

Make sure the little tab like keys are reinstalled to secure on the ball.

2x on the comments,

It actually takes quite a bit of force when the mattress is not on the board.
