Not much. Besides checking wiring and polarity, the $100 type provides 2100 Joules of power surge protection. A $37 power strip with surge protection, that you would use to protect your home entertainment system, provides 3997 Joules (Staples). Of course, any protection is better than none, but my unit is getting old and problematic. Eventually I'll replace it.
On the other hand, the $300 models provide not only power surge protection, but over/under voltage and amp protection, which better protects against the varying voltage levels found in some campgrounds. To me, the ideal is the hard-wired type, with an easy-to-read remote monitor panel. Now you're talking real money!
