Thebrake and signallights on the 5er quit working, soI removed the plastic cover from the tail light and removed the bulb and saw the contacts where rusty. One thing I saw was the plastic cover does notseal off allowing moisture to get inthe fixture. How can this be corrected? What canbe used to remove the rust from the contacts?
The contacts can be scraped with a small screwdriver. Many people put a thin bead of silicon on the edge of the lens when they put it back on. It will seal it up nicely and it can still be removed easily when necessary. You don't need gobs and gobs of it, just enough to seal it.
While you have the tube of silicon out, you can go around and give the same treatment to all the lenses on the trailer, whether they need it or not.
We had a bulb fail due to a rainstorm, found the same problem that the lens cover leaked. So, we put a bead of caulking around it, and have not had any problems since.
Thanks all, we just came back from Branson and had a great time so, it has been a few days since I read e-mail. Anway, I did not have time to work on the tail lightsbefore we headed out. And I didn't have time down there because we were running the whole time. Now that we are home, I will probably start working on it.
