Leaving Battery Connected in Storage - Bad Idea?

I am thinking about leaving the battery connected while in storage and I would appreciate some feedback on the pitfalls and flaws in my thinking.

  • We have a tear in the roof membrane that we believe occurred while in storage. We can't prove it, but we would like to know if it happens again.
  • We have battery-operated cameras which we can use to record what happens around the trailer, but they require an internet connection
  • We have an internet router that draws a maximum of 1.5 amps of 12v DC.
  • We have 380 watts of solar panels on our roof connected to 1 deep cycle battery

So I was thinking of leaving the battery connected to power the router, and the cameras out to monitor the trailer.

By my estimation, the battery can last about 33 hours powering the router by itself. Of course that doesn't account for leeching but it should still be enough to get through cloudy days.

Is this a terrible idea? Am I missiing something?

It sounds like a good plan if you suspect someone is tampering with your RV. You could always add an additional battery or more solar panels to give additional charge up on your battery to keep ahead of the curve of the drain.

What type of tear did you have in your roof material? Usually if you have a tear up there it is from a branch of a tree. I've had a couple and sometimes very difficult to see. In one case I had the roof cover replaced by insurance and the second time I just used the recommended tape. In both instances the tear was very small.

If it was vandals no doubt the tear would be much larger and noticeable.
