New tire selection dilemma for 5er?
The dilemma of making a good choice on new tires for the 5'er. I have a 2009 Cruiser CF30SK needing new tires. Currently have Hercules ST 235-80 R16, load range E on the unit. Purchased them in Durango, Colorado in August of 2011 and have 14,000 plus miles on them. They are down to 5/32 tread left and nearly 3 years old. All the chatter about China tires, ST vs LT, Goodyear Marathon, Maxxis or just go back with the Hercules brand. Have had no trouble with them. I did have a blowout in 2011 doing damage to the trailer with the original tires. I carry somewhere around 8,800 lbs on the trailer axles. Taking another 3,500 trip and want good rubber on the ground! Please share you thoughts!

I'm a Goodyear fan. That is what I run On the RV, and always ran on the vehicles when I bought new tires. I've never had a problem with them.
The last set I put on the 5er were Goodyear LT225/75R16E. Made in the USA stamped on the sidewall. Don't let anybody tell you you can't get them made here. Request it from the tire dealer, if tells you he can't get them, find another dealer.

Look at Firestone Transforce Lt's. About $170 a tire. Know a few that use them and they are really satisfied with them. Remember, all ST tires are only rated for 65 mph.

John - Just went through this. Our original tires were Missions and we made it 5 years with them. We ended up putting Greenball Towmasters on. It was them or Maxxis. I do not think any ST tires are made in the US. Goodyears might be OK, but I have never had any luck with Goodyears. I just don't think they like me so that is why I did not look at them.
Good Luck

Mark, I just went out and checked the Hercules Power STR tires on my trailer and they say 3420 lbs @ 80 psi max. They are ST tires. It is confusing!

Watch your trailer weight Lloyd. All the Goodyear LT225/75R16E I can find are rated 2680 lbs vs 3420 for the ST tires. Big difference.

That's right Cliff, but with my little trailer I have lots of room to spare.

Look at the tag on the side of the trailer and get your GVWR for the trailer. That will tell what kind of tires was stock and the weight will give you an idea of what weight rating tires you need
And Loyd the 2680 may work for you but he has a heavier trailer. NADA shows empty of 8k and it has 3 slides, the predecessor to mine. Mine is over 12k gross.

An LT tire with a 2680 lb capacity should work fine on any Cruiser, the axles are rated at 5200 lbs. There may be some newer units with 6k axles, but I'm not aware of any. If there are, then LT tires with a 3042 lb capacity will work in that case. I'm running BFG Commercial T/A's, LT235/85R16s.
Only trailers equipped with 7k lb axles and ST tires have a difficult situation switching to LT tires, but none are Cruisers.

Can someone clarify for those of us that are not tire experts how the math is done? Are you saying for example that if you have an axle rated for 5000 lbs each that each tire on that axle must be at least rated for 2500 lbs? 3000 lbs axles require a 1500 lbs tire and so on?

Yes, also the most common axle capacities are 3500, 5200, 6k and 7k lbs. Finally, while ST tires have higher load capacities than LT tires of comparable size, LT tires have higher speed ratings and supposedly greater safety margin above the rated capacity and higher quality choices.
