Odor

I was going to post this a number of years but never did. However, as I winterize this year I thought it be a good time. My issue is what I initially thought was a new trailer smell as I bought my z-1 brand new 4 years ago. The problem is that after 4 years the smell is still there and thats fine but it gets into the bedclothes, food, everything in the trailer. Its not terrible but just concern that it still exists and gets into items left in the trailer. This year during winterizing I put a full bag of charcoal in there around the trailer to see if it makes a difference.

The problem is the formaldehyde in the materials used in RVs -- read cheap particleboard, paneling, etc. I used ammonia: pour ammonia into two or three aluminum pie plates spread out on the floor and close up the trailer for two or three days. Works best in warm, sunny weather. Air out the trailer after removing the ammonia. It definitely helped ours. The smell isn't completely gone but it's much less offensive.

Search this forum, I think it's where I first found it

Is this dangerous to your health?

No, it's fine. When I did ours I was surprised that the smell wasn't that strong at all when I opened it up. I took out the ammonia, opened windows and the smell was gone quickly. It's one of those things that, for me, was kind of hard to wrap my head around, but I (we) wanted the formaldehyde smell gone, and this really worked well. I'm going to do it again in the spring (I originally did it about two years ago) because there's some odor coming back.

Thanks so much for your suggestion. I'll give it a try in the spring. It's funny though as people will come in our trailer and I will tell them how old it is and they will say "Wow, it still smells new" LOL :-)

Now that we are getting ready for camping I thought I get some ammonia. However, I am not able to find ammonia only ammonia all purpose cleaner. Would the ammonia all purpose cleaner work as well?

I can't say whether it would work or not. It's not what I used.
I think if you shop around you should still be able to find the plain ammonia.
I found one on amazon.

And I found one on Walmart. (they have several)
