pole moved when I turned corner....honest

Why do light poles move when you turn corner and where did that hole in my awning come from.

The other day in one of my test drives I was turning the corner on my street.
As I was turning my mind said ……yo stupid you have the trailer…..make wide turn, then I thought I heard a strange noise.

Looked in mirror and said hmmm that pole was awfully close.
Boy I’m good cleared it by inches without even trying.

Came back to house, parked the trailer set it up, and started to cook hot dogs (more testing of new grill of course)

Sun was in my eyes so I put out the awning. As I was cooking I noticed the sun was still hitting my face hmmm ..... I look up.

There she was a little bitty tear in the awning, ok about 2 inch tear.
Of course I said where’d that come from in shock and disbelief.

Must be vandals, shoddy workmanship, must have been there when I bought the thing…..or

Side of awning scraped against light pole in the turn and tore hole

Yup, they do that.
Ya gotta watch out for trees also. They seem to have a habit of jumping out at ya.

Put some awning repair tape on it and you will be good as new.

It happens. You will remember from now on. Long time ago I got a job driving an 18 wheeler and pulled out into traffic and had to cut my turn short due to a speeding car and clipped a power pole with the rear duals. Pole was rotten and fell on to trailer and there I sat with two lanes blocked and cops and power company people everywhere not to mention a bunch of upset passerby's.

Darn... ouch !

why I always remind myself (and the codriver) to not turn until I am almost THROUGH the intersection and on sweeping curves to keep the tow vehicle on the OUTSIDE of the turn as much as possible...

my fear is that because we have 'made it' through so many 'low' clearance bridges, etc..
that we start getting complacent and don't read the clearance signs to each other like we used to.

I learned a similar lesson the day I took delivery of a brand new Blue Ridge fifth wheel in 2011. Pulled right in Sam's Club's fueling station and hit the low clearance sign with the front air conditioner. Luckily, it was only a small crack in the cover that wasn't really noticeable, but could have been much worse. I was paranoid of low clearances after that, and still am.

Something else to watch out for is the rear end swinging wide and hitting another vehicle when you are in multi-lane traffic. Haven't done it myself, but I've heard horror stories.

Also watch rear swing when refueling. My folks just had around $3K repairs done to their Jeep after a toy hauler swung into the front fender at a gas station!

Here's Another for Ya

Could not for the life of me figure out how I got a series of small holes in the rolled up awning edge. Small holes equally spaced for about fifty percent of the awning. Not enough to replace the awning but one of those puzzles that just drives you nuts.

Two years pass and while on a trip that we've taken before I pulled up to a favorite bookstore in Front Royal, VA. It was on street parking and I just pulled up to the curb.

As I walked around the trailer I look up and see a sign controlling parking hours the exact height as my awning. I had apparently gotten too close those years ago and dragged the awning along the sign causing it to flex back and forth creating the small dings in the fabric.

So mystery solved, no real damage, but a lessoned learned.

Please watch out for the following things while driving:

1. Tree stumps and ditches in the same location that magically appear.
2. Large rocks that fell from the sky right in front of your vehicle. And
3. concrete barriers in a cattle shoot that turn in towards your RV (I figured out this happens due to vibration from the RV)

Anyhow we just wanted to warn all the RV'ers of these items that came about mysteriously!!!

This weekend we where camping in southern Mn at a Oxbo Campground!!!, A new 2015 Grand Design 44' came in and was in the process of un hooking and the hydraulic system appeared to stop working, No landing gear or slides would work. So they packed up and left very unhappy and apparently there first time out and first time pulling any kind of trailer, On there way out he cut the corner in the park and hit a two big rocks that mark the edge of the corner in the loop, never stop or slowed down. It to bad but things do happen,
