Thinking about carrying a third 20 pound cylinder, is it legal to travel with it in the back bumper of the TT?, i made a bracket to secure the tank properly on the bumper.

I would not do that just from the safety aspect of someone running into it (or maybe backing into a tree).

A suggestion may be to upgrade to 2 30lb cylinders...then you have the extra 20lb without the 3rd cylinder.

Thanks for the info, I got the sunset trail 30RE and it cannot hold the 30 lb tanks on it so am going to stick with the both 20's.

I believe you would be fine with that.
Do some quick research and I think you will find that they are fairly safe and could take one heck of an impact.
You could shoot a full one an be OK as long as you were not using a tracer round or incendiary round. Just my opinion.
As far as legal? That would be up to your state laws as they all can differ.

Where-ever you decide to store it make sure it is in an open air location.
My spare must have been over filled and when it vented off it got stuck open.
Luck for us we didn't blow up the garage and DW with it.

Well after I had a wrecker set it on the pad I had the LP company come out to fill it I was told I should have had aFED . STAMP to transport that much LPand if I had been stooped ??? $10.000 10 years ?? LOL Live & learn !

Tim,
All the tanks for an RV are D.O.T. certified so there would be no fine for them as they are designed for transport.

A couple of years ago I saw a Earth mover crush a 20lb tank in a garbage dump by mistake. The tank was buried in garbage and was there for an unknown length of time. It was crushed against a sharp edged large rock / small boulder. I was about 70 feet away - but I ducked and ran for cover - it was a big bang.

A number of years ago I saw one old 100lb tank in a cottage fire go up like a rocket ( the bottom probably was rusted) while the one beside it stayed intact.

Having seen these things happen I would not put any gas tank in a position where it vulable to impact during a high speed collision ( whether it is legal or not would not be part of my decision). Probably nothing would happen BUT it only takes one occurrence to cause at least a hell of lot of damage, or b) possibility someone horribly disfigured or dead.

Note: The earth mover operator just missed by inches losing his foot.

One other thought: If was legal or safe - would not the manufacturers install the propane tanks on the back bumpers? I have never seen such a setup on the road that was not obviously a handyman modification. Every RV I have seen in the past few years at the shows ( I have seen a lot - just bought my crossroads last October and i did a lot of research) had the propane tanks mounted in the forward part of the trailer / motor-home either on the tongue or in an enclosed cabinet.

My advice: If you need an extra tank - carry on the tongue or if you have a truck - upright in the truck box.
