Rear view cameras for travel trailers
I know that questions about rear cameras have been posted before, but the technology and prices are changing so rapidly, I thought it was worth revisiting.
We are about ready to hit the road, but we would like to attach a camera to our travel trailer, preferably low cost. We already have a backup camera in our tow vehicle which is on our rear view mirror. The questions we have are:
Are we better off hard wiring than dealing with wireless?
Should we hook it up to one of our Aux switches or leave those for other uses?
Should we be looking for a device with a recordable loop?
Where is the best place to mount on our trailer?
Any suggestions as to good low-cost devices.
Enjoy where you are going and where you are at!

I unsuccessfully tried wireless cameras in the past, but I wanted something reliable with a clear picture. I bought a hard-wired system for my 5th wheel. I've been using it over 5 years on this camper. Here is a link to one post I did, http://www.crossroadsowners.com/foru...html#post74969. This post has photos, http://www.crossroadsowners.com/foru...html#post75024. The monitor sits on the dashboard and the display is reversed like a mirror. It stays on the entire time I am towing.

I have posted before on this. I’ve tried several wireless. I’ve had a Furrion Vision for two years and two 5K mile trips and zero issues.

I have had the Furrion wireless observation camera for 3 years and 15000 miles and it works great. This is on a 42ft 5th wheel

Don’t date your money on a wireless camera system if you have a Aluminium frame, light weight RV unit.

Should you have a reception problem with wireless cameras, a booster antenna is available.

many times a wireless camera will not work well with a metal trailer. Make sure you understand the return policy before purchasing.

Don't know if there is a difference between a metal trailer and a metal truck or car.

X2. Spectrum (band) and power are the determining factors here. The Furrion camera works fine on my 35+ foot aluminum frame trailer. The other cheap cameras on amazon all lost signal as soon as I put the receiver in the truck.

I have a 38.5 foot Cruiser with the Furrion Vision 7S. Works great. It is wireless and have never had a signal issue. Spend the money on a quality system not some cheap System. I understand a good system is $500+ but you get what you pay for.

This is truth. I tried 2 inexpensive wireless cameras on my 26' er, No success with either one. fuzzy picture, fading in and out, sometimes not working at all... (curious about the Aluminum frame comment, but not sure thats factual)
Determined to make the camera work low cost, I ended up hardwiring a unit, adding pigtails at the hitch and male/female connections to the truck.
Works great, and picture is perfect.
Camera was about $20, $12 for a 30' video cable, and $10 for pigtail connectors.
