Sewer smell

Just got back from our third trip out with our sunset trail. When we got to the site we noticed a strong sewer smell in the coach that quickly dissipated. We had dumped two weeks before and no issues. Left the site today and dumped on the way home. Got home and same problem.

Now it has a black flush and I went back to the dump station and did that until clean. Is the black flush something I should be doing every time we dump?

Also I’ve been using T5 and happy camper on each trip as well.

The black tank contains a lot of solids and toilet paper that would not completely drain out unless you flushed it after emptying. I would never leave the dump station without thoroughly flushing the black tank. Why would you not use it every time?
I have a clear section of inspection pipe that I put on before the sewer hose, so I can see when the tanks are flushed clear, and are drained. It's amazing how long it takes to get clear water from the black tank.

This is the first time we’ve ever had a black water flush. Never had this issue with our old trailer. I flushed it today and I’ll do it from now on.

Probably not every time.

I do mine 2-3 times a season. The biggest thing is that you're properly treating it.

As far as the smell is concerned, the largest issues I've seen have been around the toilet and improper flushing which doesn't put enough water in the toilet to create an effective water seal.

What do you recommend for treating it?

I've been using this.

Seems to work well.

They also make a full line of treatment chemicals. The black tank cleaner works really well.

We use the Aqua-Kem RV Holding Tank Treatment from Walmart. And I flush the black tank after each camping trip until clear. Then add more chemicals and a couple gallons of water and leave in it until next use.

Geo Method

I use the Geo method. Many others do also. Here is a link to it.

I would always use the tank flush after dumping the tank at campground. You'd be surprised how much the rinse removes. As Doug said have a clear piece to view what is coming out. I often repeat the process 3-4 times.

Like Lloyd said, use the geo method. Really helps keep the tank clean.

Make sure to always leave a few gallons in tank so nothing solidifies and you end up with a 'poop pyramid' ( which is very difficult to remove).

I used to use the Geo method too in my old camper but occasionally had issues with odor.

Read up on the Unique Camping and Marine website.. I linked it above. I have a septic system at home so what they said made a lot of sense. I've been using their products for a while now with this new camper and I haven't had issues since.

Just a thought..

I ordered a bottle of the Unique. I’ll give it a shot and see if it makes a difference.

I used their tank cleaner to remove a clog (poo pyramid from the previous owner) and it worked great. Now I just use the treatment (which was the link I sent).
