As in residential construction, most floor squeaks are the result of fasteners that have loosened slightly which allows the plywood underlayment to either rub against the sheet next to it ( it only requires as little as a 1/16" of movement to create the squeak), or as is most cases the underlayment is actually causing the squeak as it slides along the staple or nail that has loosened. If it is squeaking under a vinyl floor you would have to roll back thevinyl to tighten, whereas under carpet you can go through the carpet with a breakoff screw.
