Texas heat VS 15k a/c

I can now say with authority that the 15k Dometic a/c in our Cruiser is no match for the 105+ degree north Texas heat. Our spot here in this state park is heavily wooded to the western side. We are fine until about noon -1 pm then the unrelenting heat sweeps over the site. All night shades are down and I have reflective shields in the west facing windows. While it is not 90 inside it is well into the 80s. The bedroom wall slide temperature is 95+ degrees. Once the sun getsbelow the tree linebehind our Cruiser it starts getting cooler inside. Bythe time it gets to be lights out we are comfortable once again. Sleeping has been no issue. The a/c runscontinuously from about 10 am until 2 am.

We realize that that the heat will not last forever but hot is hot while it lasts. Until this latest heat wave started July 2nd, we weremore comfortable. Our next doorneighbor here in the park has a Mobile Suites RV with two a/c units but only 30 amp service. The park's four Camp Hostsites with sewer connections only have 30 amp service so these folk's one 15k a/c runs endlessly. One of theother Camp Hosts has a new Class A RV with two a/c units and is in a 50 amp electric/water spot.He wastelling us that even with the two a/c unit running it is still warm in his coach during this heat wave.

Weknow that September and October will be somewhat cooler and the a/c will be able to keep up, but, for now, it is H-O-T!

We've been on a 6,000 mile trip around the country this summer and have been in unrelenting heat most of the time with temperatures between 95 and 105 and humidity in the 60% to 95% range. Our little AC has done pretty darn good. When we get to a campground we turn the AC on HI and open the slots under the AC in the living room all the way. We plug in two portable fans and turn on the ceiling fan after an hour or so it starts to get tolerable. Once the living room gets below 80 we close down the slots about two thirds and this pumps more cooling through the rest of the trailer.
On the really hot days it was difficult to get it much below 80 during the day but cooled down nicely at night. The fans really seemed to help distribute the cooler air. Also fans, while they don't cool, do make you feel better when they are blowing on you.

We installed a 2nd 13,500 a/c on ours in addition to the factory 15,000. We were in Palo Dura a couple of weeks ago with temps on top of the canyon between 102 and 106. I have no idea how hot it was where we were staying in the Canyon, it is usually a few degrees warmer. During the hottest parts of the day we were around 80 degrees inside the camper. Our 2nd unit is in the back bedroom. It will stay in the 70's which is comfortable. Last week we went to Durango Co to beat the heat. Highs in the 80's and our last night before coming in the low was 47. If I did not work for a living I think we would have stayed longer. Maybe this heat wave will end soon.

Our first long trip with the camper was through Montana, Utah, and Nevada. We did much the same for that trip reflection shades in the windows and everything. The 15K AC worked its heart out butcould only keep it warm. We would open the AC vent and just stand under it to stay cool. Since then we have a 12.5 in the bedroom and that helps keep the camper cool in the day time. We can use one to keep us from burning up.

You may have to think about getting one for the bedroom and look for post about a transfer switch or get a ad[ter to run 30 amp + 15amp to get both ac's to work.

Yep, it's summertime in Texas. We picked up our new trailer 7/1, got everything squared away (sorta) and left for a state park 7/8. 105 on Fri and Sat. That poor old AC ran all day to keep it at 80. Nice at night. 7/14 took it back to the dealer and had the second 15k unit added. We haven't had a chance to really try it yet but when we got it home we set the thermostat on 80 and neither one ran all the time, they kinda tag-teamed it. Then we discovered the refrigerator was abt 45-50 deg, freezer below zero, just refrig compartment hot????. Back to the dealer on 7/25 and pick it up Monday... Hopefully with a cool refrigerator. I'm ready to get the bugs out and go camping.. Got a week trip planned for the last of the month...

We were on a 9 day trip to East Texas back in June and it was 100* each day. We had ours set on 75* during the day and 70* at night. The two units would cycle on and off throughout the day and night and worked great.

Reading about he heat wave glad we stay out here in the pacific northwest nice days stays around low 70's, trips out to coast and down the oregon coast not much need for AC

Yep Larry, there's a reason it's called "God's Country". We're on our way back as fast as we can after a 6,000 mile trip around the country in this record setting hot summer. We should be in Port Susan near Marysville this evening, yeah!

I think I remember reading once, (someone correct me if I'm wrong about this) that an RV ac system is not designed to keep the RV down in the low 70"s it is just designed to keep it 10 to 12 degrees cooler than the outside temp. We were out a few weeks ago in 100 temps the AC kept it in the low 80's so I felt pretty good, and at night it cooled it down enough to sleep comfortable and even shut off several times during the night. My brother in law has two units on his fiver and they had trouble keeping up as well, so I didn't feel to bad. but I agree--it's hot!!!!

I don't know why not. My RV is roughly 260 sq ft (8x30 plus slides) and with 2 15k units that's same as a 2.5 ton house AC unit. My house is roughly 1ton/500 sq ft and has no problems. Maybe the older units but not the new ones with the upgraded insulation package...

I don't care what insulation is used, with a 2" thick wall you still don't have any insulation value!!



S&B home will have 4-1/2" wall and 6-8" min. in the roof. Much more than any RV.



Lucky if the AC keeps up at all.
