Tote tank

Looking at getting a tote tank. I’ve been told from a few people to get a smaller one because of the weight once full. I’ve never used one myself. I do know that a few of the campsites I’ve been to don’t like them transported behind a truck because of possible spillage. Just wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on them. Is there a better one out there?

I use a 15 gallon tank for that very reason. Happy with my tank from Rhino.

I also bought a Rhino 2 years ago. After reading tons of reviews before purchasing it, there were a few complaints that the wheels could break. So before even building my mount onto the back of the trailer I upgraded to a heavier load capacity wheel with bearings, and also modified the tow handle so it could never puncture the tote tank. You know the saying, if you want something to last, you might have to improve on it... so I did.

Whatever size tote you decide on, personally bigger with wheels is better, make yourself as short as possible 3" hose to connect to the tote, 15-20 gallon tote with 15-20' of hose draining a 40 gallon tank will get very messy, BTDT!

I bought one years ago to use when we were living in our camper while the house was being set - modular home. I got a cheap one that was larger than the holding tank capacity. First DO NOT buy a cheap one . It worked for my circumstance but not well. Make sure it has a valve on the side to dump it. Mine just connects to the top then you have to tip it up to dump it. Thankfully I have a loader on the tractor. That's a lot of weight.

Get one with good wheels - preferably with bearings. I did not have far to go from the camper to the septic tank but the little plastic wheels took a beating. And do not forget to get a valve for the end of your sewer hose where it connects to the tank. That way if the tank gets too full then you can shut the valve trapping what is in the hose until you empty the tank and then drain the hose. Helps to cut down on any spillage.

Lastly remember you have to store it somewhere.

Thanks for the input everyone. New trailer has a 30 gallon tank and thankfully my kids are older now and can walk to the bathroom. Going to go with a 15 gallon Rhino. Seems like it’ll be easy to change out the wheels to pneumatic if need be.

Sounds good!

After you use it a while come back and give it a review. Others may be interested in one and it may help them decide.

because of the Rhino wheel issue I bought the Barker with pneumatic wheels. works awesome.
However the wheel issues are coming from folks that pull them at 20mph through campgrounds. Just don't!!! hehe but it is funny until it blows up in front of your site.

I have an 18-gallon Barker -- that's plenty of weight to tip up to dump. Not long after buying it and using it a couple of times I switched out the cheap plastic wheels for Harbor Freight pneumatic tires and wheels. The only mod I had to do was to cut two plastic sleeve bushings in half due to the wider wheels.

I also cut down a 3-inch hose so it's as short as possible going from the valve to the tank.

Would not recommend buying one you had to tip to dump, spend a bit more & get a valve on the side. Dealing with the black tank is bad enough without having to tip the tote & dumping on your shoes.

Very true! I bought this tank 12 or more years ago and I'm not sure what was available then with a side valve in a size close to this. When time comes for a replacement it will absolutely have a valve.
