Do you all use it all the time when towing? I know on my Duramax the revs are a lot higher in T/H than out. This also takes a toll on the mpg.

What do you do?

I use T/H every time I get in the truck towing or not. I run a digital engine monitor and my transmission temps run about 5* lower in T/H. Plus I prefer the firmer shifts and higher shifting points. In my case my mileage is the same either way.

If I'm towing on the interstate and it is flat, I drive without it. In town or hills/mountains then I use it. Like you've noticed, mpg goes down in tow/haul mode.

ditto on Hunter 11's comments. Mileage doesn't seem to be affected on mine, of course having 4.88 rears already does most of the damage, But it will haul anything.

I like to run tow haul all the time on mine, but I have to kick it out on hills. It downshifts too hard for my liking. T/H helps out the exhaust brake function quite a bit too.

I use mine if I'm in stop and go traffic or slow hilly terrain. In the flatsI turn it off and stay in regular overdrive. I also turn it off on steep downhills and use the Allison manual mode to hold speeds. I do like having all the options though.

I use mine all the time when towing. I appreciate the auto shifting on the down hills.

General question. Some of the posts above would seem to indicate that I would get better fuel mileage without tow/haul on flat level ground. Please explain the concept. thanx

I also always run it tow/haul mode when towing. It'll run up in sixth gear on the flats (and up a small grade) with it engaged. I experimented with fuel mileage going across Wyoming on the way back from Mt Rushmore last summer and didn't see any difference with it disengaged.

What do you do?

I'm not sure what you mean by "revsa lot higher in T/H". All T/H does is change the shift points to better utilize the engine's power, when pulling a heavy load. The T/H also locks up the tranny for firmer shifts, so that there is less heating of the tranny fluid. The shift point spread in T/H means that you may not upshift as quickly as you wouldlike to. For instants, if you're tooling along at 55mph, then you're tranny is not likely to upshift to 6th gear, assuming you have a six speed Allison. I normally set my cruise for about 100 klicks (62.5mph) and have the tranny in T/H and let the computers do the work. As far as fuel mileage is concerned, it depends on the weather and terrain, but on the average, I get about 12M/USG when pulling our CF30SK. Edited by: Hamops

I believe that fuel mileage is not affected that much because there isn't any change in gear ratios so whether you're towing in T/H or not the engine speed will not change at a constant roadspeed. The thingabout T/H being engaged is that the anygear above 1st it locked soit's essentially a soliddrive from theengine to the wheels. If T/H in not engaged, there can be excessive slippage of the clutches that will produce a lot of unnecessary extra heat. Instead of the power going to the wheels, it's being wasted as heat in the tranny fluid.

As for towing on the flat without T/H engaged, all I have to say to that is "Why?". If you towing and you hit a gust of wind or shallow rise, the trannyclutcheswillstart to slip, producing unwanted heat in the tranny. If T/H is engaged, there is no slippage and therefore minimal change in the tranny fluid temperature.

That's my 2 cents so I'll get off the box now.

I can't speak for the oil burners, but I drive a gasser. I've tested fuel economy on the same stretch of flat interstate several times, with and without using Tow/Haul mode. My fuel economy over that stretch of road is 1-1.5mpg better without T/H than with.

Hamops makes a point I haven't considered, but in my case my tow vehicle is pretty much overkill for hauling my Sunset Trail. I'm thinking the tranny is built to withstand the heat generated and that I'm well within tolerances. If the load was higher I would care more.

Only speaking for my truck it raises the shift points to build more RPM before shifting and firms the shifts keeping heat down in the transmission. With the digital gauges I have in my truck I can monitor several functions and the transmission temp is one of them. Towing or not my transmission temp runs 5* to7* cooler in the T/H mode. That is the reason I use it every time I start the truck.
