trailer brakes

I took my new RV off of the lot and the brakes worked fine until i got almost home. My truck computer said trailer wiring problem. My lights all worked and my brake controller showed the trailer was connected but my brakes would work and stop, work then stop. I tried sanding down my ball with sandpaper thinking I wasn't getting a good ground but still no improvements. Any suggestions besides taking it back to the dealer?

I had the same problem with my F250 a couple years ago. Turned out that the wiring going to the receptacle in the bed for the fifth wheel had a bare spot and was intermittently making contact with the frame rail and shorting. It was aggravating because it would come and go. Changed that out and I haven't had a problem since, knock on wood.

So was it the truck wiring or the trailer wiring?

Take to your RV dealer they should be able to find the problem and correct it.

Ground is thru the wiring harness and plug, not thru the hitch. Spray some contact cleaner on both the plug and receptacle. Also check for a bend blade on both. Finally, the plug and harness may be flexing while on the road with intermittent contact. I use a velcro strap around the plug and receptacle cover to keep the plug from working loose while towing.

I had intermittent brake problems on two RV's. It turned out that the insulation was stripped on the wires when it was pulled through the axles. The wires were shorting out inside the axle.

My suggestion would be check for a broken, or more likely an exposed wire that is shorting out (we had this happen on our truck). I'd check the truck wiring first, then the trailer wiring, especially where the brake wires enter/exit the axles as Russ has suggested. Dayle is right on in that the ground is through the wiring harness, not the ball.

Wiring harness is grounded to trailer somewhere. Generally within a few feet of plug. Agree with the others that a frequent source of shorts is anywhere the individual wires enter into, thru, or out of the frame.

Clean the tv and Rv's plug and coat with "Dielectric Grease." Solved my problem in the past.

I had the same problem on my way home after picking up my new Cruiser from the dealer. It turns out there was a wire shorting out on the trailer brakes.
