Truck Tires/RV Insurance

We are going to put new tires on our 2008 Ford 250 Super Duty SRW Diesel tow rig. Looking for recommendations.

We are seeing a lot of ads for RV insurance, especially that provided through Good Sam. I'm a USAA member, have truck and RV riders through that company but would like some thoughts on a separate policy for the 5er.

Put a set of Kuhmo's on my F450 eight thousand mile ago and have been pleased with ride so far. Will have to see if I better the stock tires and their 34K.

I am also insured through USAA. Great company with superior service. I am not sure about beating their prices because I have never looked around. I have had several unusual claims like losing power and having meat defrost. They sent me a 400.00 check without batting an eye.

Start at Tirerack, plug in your size and sift through the results. How many miles did you get out of the originals? Do you have the 18's or 20's?

I have the same Usaa Insurance but I found out that the ability to stop and start coverage saves a great deal. I moved my 5th wheel ins to GMAC thru good sam.

I have used Cooper discover tires on my truck for years. They give good traction but are pretty quiet on the highway. Milage has been good

Thanks--I haven't purchased truck tires for years so had forgotten about the Coopers. Had those on my previous pickup/camper combo.

Guess I'd better call Good Sam and see what the diff in insurance coverage really is.

BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's are the way to go. Good traction in mud and snow and excellent tread ware. My last set lasted 80,000km.

I agree with Kamper Dave. I have been running BFG Rugged Trails since 2001 and I always get 50k to 60k miles out of a set. I rotate them every 10k miles.

Not as aggressive as the All Terrain T/A's. I have had my truck in some pretty slick mud and the Rugged Trailsgot me through it. They do fine on wet roads as well. Don't know about snow or ice since we do not get much of that down here.

How about road noise?
That is one thing I can't stand is a noisy tire on my vehicle.
My Goodyears are coming up on 5 years old, and I'm thinking strongly about replacing them.

No road noise on the Rugged Trails. Friend on mine has the T/A's on his Duramax and they do makea littlenoise on the highway.

My F-250 came from the factory with Rugged Trails. They were okay all around and lasted close to 70,000 miles. Okay in snow, okay on wet pavement,okay on the dirt roads..

When it came time to replace them this pastOctober I was ready to put on another set, buying at Costco. Just when I was about to drop the cash, Discount Tire had a promotion on the BFG All Terrains that put them at less than the price of the Rugged Trails from Costco. So I went that direction.

Noisier? Probably a little but with a diesel you really don't hear it. I can feel they are a bit more "firm" on the highway, I can feel the difference more than anything else. Definitely not a soft car tire ride. No Snow this year but I know from previous trucks with the same tirethese are pretty good in the kind of snow we get here. They seem to be a bit better on the wet pavement. But then again the Rugged Trails were pretty worn down so might not be a good comparison. If I was doing strictly highway I would be more likely to have stayed with the Rugged Trails. But with where I end up on most weekends in the Cascades I am glad I came across this deal on the All Terrains.

Our F-250 also came from the factory with BF Goodrich Rugged Trail. I just replaced them with the same from Costco at 66,000 mi. I shopped some and found Costco to be the best price. The Rugged Trail are quiet and it says made in USA on the side wall.

Costco usually does have the best price in this area. I was surprised when Discount Tires had the special on the All Terrains. I checked the manufacture date and the "Made in USA" before they went on. But most times Costco has the best price. Iwas at Costco yesterday having Michelins installed on my wife's minivan. I was surprised to see that while they only list BFG's and Michelin's on their website, the store had several other brands including Bridgestones.

Dennis, are you andSharon able to take advantage of this mild weather and get out to the CG? I'm hoping it holds thru the end of the month when I can venture out. Edited by: shoetravel

Our F550 came with Generals, and they were a disaster. We had two blowouts due to defective tires at only 30K and 50% tread left. We were on the road near Moab UT and got some tires from Big O. Not good. We've had them for 40K and even though they have plenty of tread, we are replacing them with Michelins because even though we have had them balanced 3 times they still bounce. Make sure you get a name brand because some of the off brands can have some out of round issues.

The last time we were out with the 5er was New Years weekend at Long Beach, razor clam digging. Weather was not that great but wedid get some clams. Just been doing projects at home.

Bead Balancing of tires.

Does this really work? It just does not seem possible that 4 oz. of ceramic beads inside of a big tire can have much of an impact. I assume youwould need to remove them before having Costco balance the tire.

They may violate the "Keep It Simple" rule.
