Wheel bearings

We have a 2021 sunset trail 253RB that we bought last year. We have only pulled it less then a 1000 kms. Do I need to repack the bearings or do the EZ lube?

This is a highly debated topic.

Personally I hand pack them as part of the de-winterizing. It also gives you a chance to inspect/adjust your brakes.

But a couple times a year i raise the wheel and while turning it add a few pumps of grease.

So to answer your question 1 hand repacking them and servicing your brakes would be the preferred way if you are comfortable/knowledgeable in your skills to do it. Also use a good quality DOUBLE LIP seal. 2 a few pumps while turning the wheel is better that not doing anything..

Like I stated you are going to get all kinds of opinions on this. Some have never had any problems with the EZ Lube and others have had grease go past the seals and get on the brake shoes.

Do I need to worry about it now though with having such low kms on the trailer?

I misread your post. I’ll add a few to each wheel

I would add some because there may not be much from the axle manufacture then you would be sure it has some grease.

I called a local place and had them swing by. They walked me through how to do it properly. Next question is what signs should I look for if the grease pushed past the seals?

Grease on brake shoes and back plate is a sure sign.

From experience I wouldn’t use the easy lube. I blew out four seals and ruined seals and brakes using them. I think their useless. Pack by hand.

That is a problem with the E Z Lube you can not tell until you pull the brake drum of your brakes fail from contamination. That is why most hand pack the bearings. If you pump in grease and with each pump some grease comes out the front you are probably good.

I have a utility trailer with no brakes so I can see the seal and I have never seen any grease go past it. But with brakes and the backing plate you do not really know.

All we did was add a little bit. 5 or so pumps per wheel. You can actually see the grease at the front cap now. Very little was there before.

E-trailer recommends that you repack brakes every 12,000 miles...
