How often is everyone re-packing their wheel bearings? Crossroads recommends every 6 months or 6000 miles, does that sound reasonable?

I have been doing mine every 2 years.
My thinking is--we don't redo the wheel bears on the car or pu very often, so why do they figure the RV needs it more often????????????

Good point Old Farmer. They would probably tell you that trailer wheels track differently to those of a car or p/u and therefore need more attention.

I do mine every year but most I have read say every two. I asked the dealer when I got my PP and they said two also. I just like to have them done before a long trip and after it has been sitting for a few months. It a peace of mind thing.

Isn't there a lot more load on the trailer wheel bearings than on the TV? That might be the reason although I do believe 6 or 6,000 is too often. Were planning an 8,000 mile trip this summer and that says that at one of my stops I'd have to repack my wheel bearings, not a great thing to have to do while camping ;-)

I believe the reason they say 6&6 is because you need to adjust the brakes and you might as well do bearings the same time. That being said I adjust my brakes on 6,000 miles and pack my bearings on 18,000 miles. When you adjust your brakes if you see greese contamination it's time to come apart for inspection.

My truck weights near as much as my camper and the wheels go round and round so tracking don't seem to matter.I use the easy lube and regardless what some say it works fine for me, I pump the grease in until I see grease being pushed out.The brakes according to Lippert are self adjusting and mine seem to work very well there also. Even at that you don't have to remove the wheel or bearings to adjust brakes.

6 months or 6,000 miles seems too frequent. I went a year and half before I repacked mine for the first time but have done it every spring since then. My Lippert axle service manual says to repack them every 12,000 miles or 12 months. I do give a few pumps of grease into the ez lube before we go on an extended trip so I do use the ez lube but I feel more comfortable pulling the wheel and inspecting everything on an annual basis. I would not want to go too long between repacking because I worry about the seal leaking.

I have the same setup with the self adjusting brakes and just use the EZ lube. I trust it also and havent been let down so far.

170,000 on my cars and 1 became noisey but not dry or real bad. As some might know cars only have ONE bearing per wheeel wheras trailers have 2 per wheel, 6000 seem to often.

I've done mine at 2 years. While I have the tires off I run them over to the local tire store for balance and new valve stems. I'll be doing them againearly June when I replace the tires.

If we had drums we could remove without removing the bearings I would probally do my bearings at 20,000 miles.

This being my first trailer I've never done brakes/bearings before. 2 years of use and about 20,000 miles, I figure I had better learn this year!

Lenny, you could always take it to the local tire store. It may be worth the cost if you are either not sure what to do or if you don't have the proper tools.

If I'm gonna do this re-packing before our July Myrtle Beach Trip, I have a question.

Do you do one wheel at a time by driving up on a single wheel block which lifts the other or do you jack the axle (too much weight on one axle?) to get to one at a time?''

You can email privately cavy16262@comcast.net if you wish.

I do it by pulling the rig up on my Trailer Buddy and do one wheel, one side at a time. If I had two jacks I would lift one side up (on the frame) and do both wheels but I don't. The Trailer Buddy is easy and convenient.

I'm sorry Stan but I don't know what a "Trailer Buddy" is. I Googled it and find lots of "buddy" things, buddy bearings, buddy heaters, even the movie trailer for "Anger Management" but nothing that raises a trailer wheel.<div siber__q92dpb7seovvtbh5__vptr="dce6680" sourceindex="5">Do you have a link or furtherexplanation?

Hi FF,

I got mine from Eastern Marine http://www.easternmarine.com/Electri...ke-Assemblies/They are the Dexters Nev-r-adjust and they work great. And eatern still has the best price on them I have seen. I added mine on last spring and after 1 season havent had no problems and they are adjusted just like they are supposed to.Edited by: fixit5561
