Just bought a Sunset Trail reserve ST28BH

First off, thanks for all of the good information you all place on this forum. I sold a Starcraft expandable 2 years ago and have been debating ever since. Kids still talk about the raccoons stealing the snacks while we were making s'mores.

I must admit that I needed a TT to get my wife to camp, and the amenities such as the slide-outs, AC, and nice bathroom really helped get the sale.

My reservation has been the Lippert Schwintec slide system, the wood truss roof and the "put together" fiberglass sidewalls opposed to the vacuum laminated type. Too many salesman opinions and not to mention the internet opinions. TT seem to be a bit of a crap shoot with all of them having some issues from what I hear.

I'm looking forward to camping again, and just "getting away," even if it's for the EAA again which is basically in my back yard. Hope to see some of you there.

Welcome. I am sure you will love it. I would really like to take ours to Oshkosh. Do you fly?

I do have my single engine land, but haven't flown for a few years. Kids throw a wrench in. I think you really have to be committed to be safe, so I had to sort out the priorities. Camping at EAA is really reasonable, and a LOT of fun, from the included shows, bands, and outdoor theaters to the night airshow. It's a good sized city. Just try to get away from HWY 41, it's a bit noisy. Part of the reason that expandable went.

I pick my unit up on Wednesday, and I wondered if anyone had any opinions about the salesman's offers of extended 5 year warranty, the fiberglass coating, or fabric protection. I'm just assuming this is to line their pockets, and has no real worth but I may be wrong. This dealership has the "lifetime" warranty, as well for some major many major components; as long as you comply with getting them serviced every year from a service center. I know crossroads went to the 1 year warranty, and some components have longer warranties.

My opinion:

I prefer the hung walls over the vac lam

warranty: yes I bought the 7 year one from Camping World

Fiberglass coating: no if you are able get a good polymer sealant like Rejex and do it yourself

Fabric Protection: Go to Walmart and buy cans of Scotchguard fabric and upholstery protector

Welcome and good luck with your new Rv.

On most products, I think the extended warranty is a bad idea. On a travel trailer, I think it is well worth the cost for the peace of mind. Do your research and buy a good warranty from a company that has been around a while. Xtra-Ride and Good Sam's I think are pretty good options. I would opt for a 7 year if you can get it, and don't be afraid to haggle on the cost of it. If you are purchasing through the dealership, they pay a wholesale cost for it and then usually double it to the customer. They have room to work with you on it.

Congratulations on your new rig and welcome to the forum!

We bought the same trailer and said no to all their extended warrenties and coatings. I figured if something major was going to go wrong it would happen in the first year. As for the coatings we will just wax it ourselves once a year and treat the fabric with Scotchgaurd. Had the trailer now a month and couldnt be happier with it. Of course we encountered some minor finishing problems that I corrected myself.

Welcome aboard and best of luck with the new TT. I can relate to your kids and the raccoons. Some of my best memories as a kid are of camping in the sierra nevada range in California with my parents and the skunk that waddled right under my sisters chair as we were around the fire. Two words were uttered... HOLY #&%; and then we scattered.

I love the avatar.

Welcome to the forum and the family. I, like you, have my single engine land license. Also like you, I haven't flown anything except Microsoft Flight Simulator in many years. At a high school reunion a few weeks ago, I met up with the CFI who instructed me, and he said I should get back in.
