Looking for recommendations for campgrounds that are 3-4 hours out of Chicago. Southern Wisconsin, Southern Illinois, Indiana. Live in the Western burbs and just wanted to get some feed back on where you would go if you had a four day weekend.

Thanks in advance.

Oh, I have a youngster to keep occupied so pools, game rooms and places to see would be nice near your recommendations.

5 hours from Door County Wisconsin with lots of family entertainment, 3 1/2 hours from South Haven MI and Sunnybrook RV Resort with Lake Michigan and lots to do in the area + at the resort. No campgrounds to recommend but lots to do in the St Joseph/Benton Harbor Mi area and not far from South Haven is Saugatuck/Douglas MI with lots of arts attractions as well as family entertainment.

Many more areas to choose from but I haven't camped much in south west Michigan or Northern Indiana.

Springfield, Il...lots to do there, a KOA nearby and about 3 hours from chi-town. Lots of nice state parks in the south part of the state as well, but a further drive. Hannibal, MO is a great place, 1.5 hours west of Springfield. You could also go up to Savannah, IL and stay at Mississippi Palasaides state park. It is 1/2 hour from Galena which is nice historic town, golf nearby, shops, the river, etc..

I can speak for SE WI.

Silver Spring Campground in RIO WI.

Merri Mac in Lodi

Riverbend in Watertown

Holiday Shores in the Dells

Hidden Valley in Janesville

Granted some of these aren't in SE WI. but still reasonable time travel time.

Indiana Dunes State Park sure was a pretty place. Not sure about all the kiddy stuff but not too far from Chicago.

Not sure if west central indiana is an option but Turkey Run State Park has a lot to offer. Nice pool, pretty good trail system for all levels, float trips down Sugar creek.

For that matter Pokagon State Park in Indiana is a wonderful destination but the camping sites require a minor engineering degree to level your trailer/5er.

No particular order. Just how they came mind. Also would add Devil's Lake State Park, Jellystone Calendonia.

Jellystone isn't great, but isn't bad. Probably the best place between Milwaukee and Chicago for kids. It's about 40 mins North of Great America on 294.

Sorry, Silkver Springs.

Scott - Turkey Run State Park does look neat. Thanks again for the recommendation.

Dave

Ps - I'll give a site that we like near Galena Illinois. There is a KOA in Lena Illinois that is very nice, Heated pool, a large jumping pillow, always something going on for the kids, close to Galena and not to far from New Glarus, WI. Nice town and excellent brewery.

We're heading to Silver Springs as well this weekend. Maybe we'll run across each other.

So far in WI. we've camped at:

The auto repair place in Westfield. Seemed like a nice place to camp while they fixed the water pump in the TV that blew an hour from the dealership where we picked up our new pull-behind.

Pride Of America campground in Pardeeville. Nicely run place with lots of friendly drunks, golf carts, a pool, lake, game room, bar and grill. It's a giant party, but everyone was well behaved.

Lake Lenwood in West Bend. Quiet and simple place on a small lake. Great beach and playground. There were a lot of rules and the owner was quite happy to enforce all of them. (Only certain brands of motorcycles are allowed, for example)

Lakeland RV resort in Milton (Near Ft Atkinson.) Another giant party, but not so well run as Pride of America. When we arrived, someone was in our spot because someone was in their spot. We ended up sharing with the neighbors campsite and there was plenty of room. Management didn't really seem to want to solve the problem other than to bring an extra table and a fire ring. Cops had to come to convince the neighbor across the way not to run his chain saw after midnight.

Looking forward to the next trip which might be a circumnavigation of Lake Michigan.

I heard that about Pride of America. For a much quieter place check out Duck Creek. Really nice owners, no pool, but a small decent swimming pond.

Lake Lenwood sounds like Pearl Lake in Beloit. Great swimming, but that it's. The owners are jackasses, bad policies surrounding credit uses, etc. We won't return.

Lakeland RV. Chainsaw after midnight is a classic. I feel that Hidden Valley right down the road is much nicer. If you want a really quiet place check out Viking Village in Stoughton. We have a continual reservation for Memorial Day and Labor along with 12 other friends, so it's a bit more lively on thoseweekends. However, it's usually pretty quiet.

Thanks for the tips. We'll check them out later this fall. We just decided that our trip around Lake Michigan is ON, heading out this Friday night.

salda01 - Did you happen to be in the 206 site area with the Steelers fans from Kenosha?

My wife was wearing a tie dye Steelers shirt this last weekend. Silver Springs was nice. Not sure I like the four per space area. Would be big fun for a large group. I hear Halloween is off the hook up there.

Thanks again for the recommendation.

Dave
