Fall trip to mid Atlantic region?
My wife and I are thinking of making a trip to the mid Atlantic area this fall, probably inland with our two mini dachshunds. I would think 3-4 weeks total. I've towed a number or times locally with the truck and previous camper, but only one short trip with current camper. We're both old as old dirt, so I'd expect to drive 3-400 miles per day max. Any recommendations on places to spend the night? With easy on/off to highway?
Leaving RI, I'd expect to get to south Jersy or Deleware on first day and to destination(?) at end of second day. We think we'd like to hit the Smoky mountain area for sightseeing but would like to hear of "must see" places in that general area. Thanks in advance.

Eric, what routes do you plan to use? With that info, we can give you suggestions as to campgrounds, etc.

I'm guessing I'll come down the Jersey pike and head south west towards the beginning of Skyline drive. We like wooded campgrounds rather than open field style camping, but want full hookups. I'd guess we'll get a site near the Skyline drive to sight see nearby areas. Any recommendations on "must see" spots would be great

Fell in love with the Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area on a return from Chicago this last year. They've gone through a lot with the fires this year, mostly Gatlinburg (closest to the forest), so keep an eye on their updates.
1. Didn't have time for Dollywood, but REALLY enjoyed the Knife Shop in Sevierville. As big as a Cabellas, this place has rooms and rooms of knives and outdoor stuff. Not just Swiss Army Knives (my fav), but kitchen cutlery, garden tools, and more! Plan on two hours, at least!
2. Stayed at River Plantation RV Resort, because of the hot tub. But their pools, leisure tub float, and more, were the highlight for us. The place was spotless, easy to access, and not too expensive!
My other advice is don't make each stop a "hitch and go" stop! It's too hard on the mind, body, and spirit. Pick out the places you want to visit, and spend at least two, maybe three, days in each stop. It's better for your heart and health, and besides, what's the hurry? Believe me, there is plenty to see and do at almost every stop. Spend a day to arrive, a day to see the sights, and maybe even a day to "chill," before hitching up and heading to the next stop!

Keep in mind that Mary's Rock Tunnel, near mile marker 32, on Skyline Drive is 12' 8" in the center and less at the walls (it's arch shaped). My 5er is too tall for that tunnel. There are a lot of campgrounds along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. The park's brochure is here https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvis...sh_SNP_web.pdf. The driving map is located here, https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvis...whole_park.pdf, and area maps are located here, https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/maps.htm.

I recommend Timberlane campground in south Jersey. It is just off 295, clean, and 10 minutes historical old city Philadelphia, which is a must see if you are passing thru. Also there is a camping world about 10 minutes also which has a decent service center in Bridgeport, NJ. I've stayed at Timberlane the sites were level, facilities clean and staff friendly. Here is a link if you are interested.
