Looking for suggestions on nice family campgrounds in Tennessee. Looking for place with a nice pool and a playground. We'll be staying the east side of the state.

Greetings,
We have stayed at Volunteer Park FamilyCampground (volpark.com) in Heiskell, Tn. about 12 miles north of Knoxville and also at Misty River RV Park (mistyriverrv.com) in Walland, Tn. about 8 miles southeast of Maryville. Both were excellent parks, large sites, pull thrus, full hookups, kids playground, pool, store, etc. I would recommend both of these. I have been searching and there are several more around the eastern part. Ihaveheard that the parks in and around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are a little crowed with small sites but I've never stay there. We also stayed one night at Nashville Country R V park in Nashville but I WON'T go back there. It's and older park with very small sites. When it was built there must have only been tents and pop ups. We were beside another 5 th wheel and with the slides out you could not walk between the campers. Hope this helps and Happy Camping.

We have stayed at Tremont Outdoor Resort in Townsend, Tn. for years. We began camping there when our children were young and now take our grandchildren. It is close to Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains and lots ofother interestingthings to seeare close. Reservations may be necessary during certain times of the year, but it is an enjoyable place.

Thanks for the great info... Keep it coming. I have been looking at websites and viewing different places using Google Earth.
I pulled upone place Pine Mountain RVPark andGoogle Earth shows the place as aempty field.I wish Google Earth would date thephoto.
One thing I found interesting was the campgrounds in Nashville are all right next door to each other and all the sites appear to be right on top of each other.

Where you stay in the Smokies also depends on what activities you will be doing. It can be an hour drive from one area to another depending on traffic and the route you take. Townsend and Walland are on the opposite side of the park (and are quieter) from Pigeon Forge.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com ffice ffice" />
We have stayed on the east side of Gatlinburg at Jellystone in Cosby. It is about 20 min from Gatlinburg but is more like camping in the mountains than other places.
Have you checked out RVparkreviews?

To all I really appreciate the feedback.. I have been doing the Google Earth thing and some of the places look nothing like their website photos. The Townsends area is really begining to look like the area we'll be staying.
Thanks again

What time of year are you planning on going? There are lots of beautiful sites to see in the area. Have you been to the area before?

Anyone on here stayed at Pine Mountain RV park in Pigeon Forge. Looks like a nice one and just opened in 2008. Looks close to Dollywood and town. Give me good and bad please. Thanks
Look at a fall trip to the area.

We just stayed at Tremont Outdoor Resort (Townsend) this past weekend and it was great. We were there by ourselves but sites are nice and there would be plenty of activities in the regular season. We also checked out several other campgrounds while there. Big Meadow Family Campground has large sites, concrete pads, probably will stay there next time. Ye Old Mill was a small campground (and closed) but from the driveway sites were nice size. The KOA, and Lazydaze, were nice but sites were a little close. All these were with in 2 -3 miles of each other. Happy Camping this summer.

We are looking to go during the mid June time frame. We are hoping to relax do some hiking, site seeing. I really leaning towards staying away from Pigeon Forge.
Heatcoolguy - Thanks for the insight on Big Meadow I'm going to echeck them out.

Tremont is right on a creek/river that you can tube on. It is also the closest campground to Cades Cove, which is a must see and experience. The river road from Townsend toward Gatlinburgis very scenic. If you have children there is more to do at Tremont. We started to stay at BigMeadow once but chose not to after driving in and looking, nothing to do there at that time. Good luck on your choice.

Nothing to do at the campground?? Or nothing to do because of being off season? The tubing sounds like is would be great.
Thanks again to all for the insight

There was nothing to do at the campground. Another good place to check about campgrounds is at campgroundreviews.com.

I appreciate everybody's input and the other couple we're going with made the reservations. We'll be staying at the Great Smokey Jellystone. He like the river that surrounds the complete park and we know they will have plenty to do for the kids. My biggest worry is my unit might be to big for most sites that back to the river.
Thanks again.Edited by: salda01

Townsend is a really nice and quiet area. It is also easy access to Pigeon Forge and Smoky Mountain Park. You can drive into town for the day and then right back to tranquility.

We stayed at Creekside RV park in Pigeon Forge in April '08. Very nice park. Clean and close in to Dollywood. Sites were level with plenty of room. Great place to eat at Mel's Diner, which is between campground and the Pigeon Forge strip.

Are Tremont or Big Meadow on a trout stream? Is the fishing good?

I give the Cosby Jellystone 2 thumbs up... It's a small park maybe 50 full-hook up including cable. The sites are narrow, but we really didn't notice it as we were hardly there during the day. The site fire pit sits along the flowing river so it makes a nice back drop along with the sound of flowingwater.
Being this campground is small it's also very well kept up.Along with everythingbeing very clean (bath houses, laundry, pool)The owner (Dave)is involved in just about every aspect along with his two sons and wife. They leadyou to your site, help you back in and will evenhelp level yourunit with their boards if needed. The owner will even drive around in his tricked out SUV golf cart, keeping everybody informed if there is severe weather present. If you not at your site, he will come tilt your awning to shed water. The sites are all rock, but the whole area is rock. When we head back we'll definately be staying there again. Really nice people and reconmend it.
